Pel Job EB22 pump pressure. HELP

chris1v ยท 2011-04-10 19:22

I have a 1989 EB22. I have a drive problem with my machine. I want to do a pressure test to the pump. Can someone one please tell me what the complete operating pump pressure should be? How many PSI? thanks.

Welcome to the forum chris1v. :usa I'm not familiar with your machine, don't know what the pump pressure should be for sure. But typically, when you do a pressure test, you not so much doing a pump output pressure test as much as you would be testing the various relief valves in the hyd circuit. And things can differ depending on whether your machine uses a fixed displacement gear pump or whether it uses some form of hydrostat pump. What kind of drive problem are you having? What about other machine operations, any other quirks in operating? BTW, would you like for me to add the brand of machine to your thread? I didn't even know what an EB22 was, had to do a google search.

This was my first time using this form, and i`m not a mechanic. I have it at an uncles to repair and he is the mechanic. Sorry i did not to say that the brand was a Pel Job. It is not a common brand here, but is bigger in europe. The problem with the drive is that when i want to turn it will start to turn but then it stops driving the one side. I have to play with the levers to get it to go again. Before we rip things apart my uncle wants to do a pressure test to see if it is holding pressure, (not leaking) or if the pump is even putting out enough pressure. He thinks it may be seals, but again just wants to do a pressure test before ripping apart. My uncle is not familiar with this brand also, That is why we are hoping someone can tell us what psi the pump should be working at. I hope i`am explaining this properly, or this is making sence to everyone. ( I`m not a mechanic) All help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Yes, you're making sense chris1v. Thing is, unless someone on the forum is familiar with this machine, it would be hard for anyone to give you even near exact specs. Also, type of pump is unknown. Many small excavators use a single or dual gear pump, others use hydrostat type pump. But again, it's unlikely you'll be able to actually test the pump max pressure output, at best you'll test the settings of the various relief valves. Typically, average pressure on systems will be in the area of 3,000 psi, sometimes more, sometimes less, hard to say exactly what yours should be. One other approach to determine if pump is good is the operation of other machine functions, boom, stick, bucket, swing. If these functions are operating proper with good digging power, chances are your pump is good, but can't say for certain as I don't know the machine components, but on many machines it indicates the problem is in the drive components themselves and not the pump. If that's the case, you're problem could be relief valves for that drive motor, internal failure of drive motor, or failed center swivel seals.

This sound like it could be swivel once again. One way to test it is to put 4 pressure taps on the motors. one on each forward and reverse. now run or stall the tracks and watch the gauges. only forward should show any pressure when moving forward, if it show any (on a 8000psi gauge) in reverse then it is bleeding over, probably in the swivel. try this in all directions, both and one at a time and see what you get. Checking pressure on a pump does not really tell you its condition. A weak pump will have lower flow but can still make pressure in a stall condition. You need to get the cycle times and they will tell you how your system is.

Thanks for the info guys. I will bring this info to my uncle He does have the proper tools and gauges to do everything. He left it up to me to find out the psi. If there is anymore info that you will need to know to help me just ask me and i will get the answers. ATCOQUIP i will find out what type of pump it has. I do have the shop repair manual for it,but it does not say any pump pressure.

Hi Chris, Just abit of back round info on your machine first, Peljob where bought out by Volvo around 99/2000 or so! If you are looking parts etc you could your Volvo dealer! Is it both drives or just one, are the other fuctions working ok? Aiden

Yes thank you, i do know about volvo. That is were i ordered my rollers from and some other parts. It is more the left drive that stalls out or has no power than the right, but the right is also weak, but not as bad.

That's what we're trying to tell you chris1v, it's unlikely the shop repair manual will note what the pump output pressure should be. What you will likely find is pressure specs for relief valves, such as boom, stick, bucket, etc. As Lee-online noted previously, even a worn pump can develop pressure, it just takes longer to do it. The most likely suspect for your problem is the center swivel, but can't say that with all certainty.

thanks for the help guys. I will relay these messages to my uncle.
