probably a dumb question TD7E…. what needs replaced first on undercarriage?

grimlock97 ยท 2011-07-22 11:43

Okay, My idlers are almost to the end of the rail and there is a lot of slack currently so i need to tighten the tracks, i'm scared once i tighten this time the idler will be past my rails. What gets replaced first, what will tighten the tracks the most, the pins don't feel like they have ever been turned, they are pretty round, not flat on either side, both the front idlers are worn but not horribly, and the sprockets don't look that bad, but something is worn out and i wanna know what will make the biggest difference in getting the tracks to tighten back up, Or, can i get a whole new undercarriage for my TD7 for 3500 bucks like i have heard? Any suggestions welcomed.

Your sprocket axles and bearings might be loose in the finals, but that would not give you that much slack. You might need to look at a good one to compare.

The bushings and pins in the links could be the cause there are measurements to check them call heavyquip 1-800-666-8722 and ask them they will have the info. The best way to do an undercarriage is replace everthing at once. I have removed a link to tighten them up its just a temporary patch to cover the problem Steve

Thanks guys, someone was also telling me to just swap the sprockets first or take a link out, but i wanna do it right so i can have several more years out of this machine. Thanks again for all the info.

Hello also be sure to count the links sounds like u could have too many if they have ever been changed

thanks again, i talked to the man i got it from yesterday (he helped me get it out of a mud hole) and he is the one that said he was told to take a link or two out b/c they looked too long. I'll see if i can do that, the sprockets just seem l ike they still have a lot of life and so do the idlers and chains and pins, and they are new track adjusters, i don't wanna be cheap but i can't afford a whole new under carriage unless it's under 5k.

Take a link out and see what that does, done it many times to get a few more hours out of the machine's undercarriage, ask to see how many different versions were made for your machine, I don't know if they made a long track version in that machine or not but someone could have put the wrong track on and taken some links out of it already to make it fit. Also ask about track gauge to see if there was more than one made for that machine or someone put a different gauge rail on from a wrong machine and its not quite right but will work, you can tell all of this by measuring the undercarriage and comparing to what's supposed to be on there and how much wear is on the current undercarriage. If its not riding up on the sprockets and things are still looking good I'd opt for the cheapest fix, torch out a link and put it back together again and wear the whole thing out completely, its not like the parts are worth anything to sell anyhow other than scrap, so you might as well get all the good out of them first.

There are some track link wear charts on Crawler Heaven that you might find interesting http://www.crawlerheaven.com/tracklinks_chart.htm I am just finishing up some U/C work on my TD7G standard track. I have half of the old pads remaining to bolt onto the new chain and I am ready to roll. These are the prices I found and I got quite a few quotes on the chains. They were all suprisingly close. chains, 34 link 6.5" pitch salt $1560 ea X 2 Vtrack Passini Spain sprockets $180 ea X 2 Martiparts Spain rollers $139 ea X 10 if all replaced after market ?? rock guard spacer and bolts $50 ea Had to cut some to get rock guards off gas for torch $200 Cut pads off old chains, rock guard and roller bolt removal 16" pads $22 ea X 68 w/ mud reliehf holes $28 ea misc & new bolts $350 Depending on what you do you get to $3.5K or $5 real quick

Believe it or not a friend of mine bought chains from the local dealer for his D31 and the idler was still off the end. Turns out the dealer ordered chains with 1 to many links.

D5MXL skid plates? Trying to get my skid plates back on my 2001 d5mxl. The bolts seem to small for the holes. I am the one who took them off so I know these are the right ones. What the heck? I got it all back on and 5 minutes later it fell off. I have pictures, how can I put them on here?
