Problem with Case 445 Skidsteer

mant ยท 2006-02-27 16:54

I'm having a problem with my NEW Case 445 skidsteer. It takes around 30 - 40 sec. to shut off after turning the key off. It has been back at the dealer for the past 5 weeks, they and the factory can't come up with a fix. Has anyone had similar problems, it seems its only effecting the 445 model. I'm getting ready to get my money back and head to a different make.:Banghead

Welcome! I don't know much about diesel engines, so you'll have to take this with a grain of salt. As I understand it, diesels are shut off by cutting their fuel. That would at least isolate some things to check. Perhaps the turbo is leaking a little oil into the intake causing it to run after you turn off the key. Perhaps there is a problem with the injectors. It could be as simple as an electrical problem with the key switch. I hope it gets fixed, but if you do go get your money back it sounds like you should check out another dealer as well. They are supposed to be able fix these kinds of things so you don't lose time working.

How is it when you go to restart? Does it crank a while before it fires?

We have a 440 and haven't had that problem. We had some electrical glitch that would lock up the loader arms on and off, air stopped working and the cab has so many air leaks I look like PigPen on a dusty day. Other wise it has been a great machine for us, too bad about your problems. Don't blame you for being frustrated. Does yours smoke any when you start it?

The machine starts up fine, runs great, just doesn't want to stop (wish I had a few workers with that problem). It supposed to be an injector problem unique to the 445's. They tried changing out the injector pump and injectors still no change.

Mant, you are not the only one with the run on problem. I was just reading about a 60XT with the same. On most diesels they will engerise the fuel solenoid to run but some like Cat energise to stop. A bad earth, flat battery or damaged terminals will cause this. Check the alternator output and earth terminal on the battery. After that you are into diesel technician territory. The injector thing sounds like a load of BS unless they are leaking bad. The injectors will supply fuel to the combustion chamber only when the pump (or computer) tells them to. Sounds like they didn't have a clue and where fishing with an excuse to charge you some.

I think Squizzy is on to something. It sounds like for some reason the fuel solenoid is hanging up and not getting the signal to close right away. It could be a bad ground like Squizzy mentioned or other loose connection. Another possibility is dirt in the seat of the solenoid preventing it from closing.

N W H The fuel shut-off solenoids usually are adjustable as to how far they pull the fuel shut off lever They tend to be adjusted too loose because most have a contact switch in base of the housing and if dosn;t allow the plunger to bottom out the solenoid will fry The switch in the bottom of the unit cuts the amps back on the solenoid A few turns on the threaded adjuster will probably cure your problem.
