Yair . . . this is new to me, obviously a prototype but what was its application? Cheers.
Im pretty sure cat built that as some sort of traction tester of some sort. Its in one of my old books. I'll look it up. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
It has two seats so I assume its designed to insure a parking place in any city when you take the little lady to dinner. Seriously it looks like it is designed to pull rather that push, no blade or push bumper, and huge front weights. I wonder if it is designed for ripping coal veins or something on that order. Back in the 70s there was a 3 engined coal ripper built out of three Steiger tractors, one front end and two rear end sections, in a tricycle arraignment to try to rip 10 ft in coal. Traction was a problem for it in the coal mines. Then the "big" cats came along and it went back to the plant never to be seen again.
With the scraper neck, and both carriages looking like they're made to pivot with the neck up and down... that's most curious.
I remember seeing this set up many years ago. It was set up with a Holland belt loader. Drive down through the cut with a train of belly dumps and load on the move. It was very impressive and moved a lot of dirt in a short time.
02Dmax is correct, Look in the Caterpillar Chronicles, it is on the last page, 166. It was designed to test drawbar and tractive effort of large D8 and D9 tractors, especially the Quad-Trac and SxS D9G dozers.
looks like the nose of the rear tractor would just lift off the ground on a pull, im sure the guys at CaT had it figured out tho pj
