Hi there everybody, my dad a few weeks back purchased a 580k sideshift backhoe with 4000hrs on it (I think it has 14000hrs) for the farm. Now Iv tried to look through as much info from this site to identify likely problems, furthermore I purchased an online manual with 1200 pages which remarkably has no information on how to perform regular maintenance like oil changes and such. So with this comes my first question, 1 we have the carraro axles and the breaks chatter when applied which I read is due to improper oil in the transaxle, where do you drain the oil from the trans axle? and since there are no case dealers where we are is there any alternative to the hytrans fluid recommenced by case or perhaps an additive that can be mixed with regular gear oil? 2 Iv read about checking the front axle (4x4) for anything od and Iv noticed that the input shaft rotates by hand about 90 degrees before it actualy "catches" is this normal? 3 while looking throuh the parts diagrams on casece.com I noticed a fourth gear lock switch, I assume this locks the torque converter? If thats the case then ours doesn't work lol. 4 the previous owners welded some of the cylinder glands shut, why would they do this? Stripped threads? I apologize for any of the questions above which might have been already answered in another post and any input and perhaps insight would be greatly appreciated. Mike
So I found where to drain the oil on the transaxle, is there anyway to get the oil out of the torque converter as well? or would that cause it to lose prime?. will probobly flush cooler with diesel aswell. hytrans cannot be found for the life of me over here :Banghead, so were just gonna use a synthetic trans oil thats used in the tranny of our Claas tractor which also has wet brakes. ive inspected the front axle as per some posts on this forum, there is "no" play in them at all just the ball joint on the left side which is tolerable for now, but the kingpins are clogged (cant get any greas in them through the nipple) so i may have to take those out to drill out and clean them i just dont want to damage the shims. the pivot pin which holds the front axle is very loose but i havent got around to getting it out yet. the sideshift "brake" cylinder has a big leak in it (as per pic) so will separate the hoe from the machine to get at that (i think its just a regular o ring in these that needs replacing) i also cant get over why they welded the gland nuts on the cylinder it agravates me (see pics) i found a weld repair on the frame of the loader also below. so we'll see what else pops up for repair but will be going to see a guy who used to be a dealer for these backhoes, he says that he has a bunch of parts and hoses still in their original packaging laying around, for 500€ i can take it all so we'll see what he's got.
There is no equivelent to Hy-Trans Ultra. I have come across a few machines over the years, not using Hy-Trans, can't really say how good or not good other oils are. All I know is that I've always used Hy-Trans in the machines I have serviced - as it isn't too badly priced & easy to get. I don't think that model has a drain on the torque convertor - the transaxle holds near 60lts anyhow. Make sure you pull the screen at the LHS of trans. while the oil is out. Don't know why so many people call those transaxles a Carraro - they are actually a Case transaxle - came from a agricultural tractor, can't recall which model....& fitted to the euro K & SK. That welding repair to the loader frame pivot is not unusual to see - but yours is pretty extensive! As to why they welded the glands......??? Maybe they got a welder for Christmas & just had to use it somewhere! One of those swing cyl rods looks like it has been rewelded to the yoke, be sure there isn't too much movement at the upper & lower swing tower pins & bushes, as the rocking movement caused by the slop of worn pins & bushes can load up those swing cyls causing the breakage. 4th gear lock switch - never seen that option over here, not sure what it should do....
Thanks alrman, you have a very good eye wish you could have been there when we bought it. ill take a look at it when i go back to the farm next week. so i bought all the parts in the pic below for 400€ came home and found out that all of them have part numbers for the 580L :Banghead my mistake i know, so i called him back up and explained, he told me that he'll look into it and that he will give me money back if its the case. what a day. i noticed the fourth gear locking circuit on the casece.com website, under their parts search, if you type in 580k in the model field then go under the electrics folder and look at diagram 4-54 FOURTH GEAR LOCKING. i also dont know exactly what this is but i attached the diagram anyhow
yes sir i did check this when we bought it, it actually has very little play in these pins (probably because they replaced it for the reason you wrote above) the side shift itself however, is loose because the metal bars which hold the boom to the side-shift frame are worn so i flipped them around, also the bottom left brake (pistons) is leaking so much it doesn't "clamp" the hoe well.
i found some oil here with the following specification: Case Internacional: J/C 145/MS, 1210,J/C 185/MS 1204, MS 1205, B6, MS 1207= Hy-Tran Plus MS 1209= Hytran Ultra which is selling for 85€ / 20 liter jug
