Really hard shifts on D6T

watglen · 2023-06-07 22:46

Hello all, Its been a helluva long time since my last post. I hope you all are well My d6t is having trans issues. The symptom are predictable. When you are in reverse, and idle down to slow to a stop, then click into neutral, there is a double bang bang as the tractor comes to a stop. Its like the brakes are hammering on twice. Its very dramatic. Makes you cringe. Doing the same thing going forward is fine. Also when you are alterating quickly back and forth, its fine. ie pushing, decel, reverse, accel in reverse, decel, forward, accell..... Works just fine. But in reverse, decel, neutral... bang ... bang! I can overcome it by decel, brake to a stop, then neutral. That prevents it from happening Trans is at operating temp. I have dealer coming monday to investigate. Maybe a recal, but my money is on an internal o-ring somewhere. Thoughts? Thanks guys. Ken

As the owner of a D6T I'm going to watch this thread. I hope you find the problem easily and without much expense.

Oil analysis results show anything.? Done any powertrain filter cuts.? Removed & inspected the transmission pump suction screen.? Calibration of the transmission clutches would be my first suggestion if the results of the question above were inconclusive. 2nd suggestion would be a brake calibration. 3rd suggestion would be look at the operation of the service brake pedal position sensor.

Have you had the Nitrogen cylinder re-charged or at least pressure checked, as for your hard shift its the clutch you are coming out of that causes the bang, so if you are going from 2nd to 1st forward and it makes the smash up noise it's 2nd speed modulation control that is faulty, the CAT ones can be pulled to bits and cleaned up, your clutch is hanging up chap, as Nige said a latest Flash File install and clutch fill calibration followed with a Brake calibration that will include the foot all the way down, the modulation valve on 1st speed or reverse would be suspect, if in 1st forward to N works fine it would be Reverse control. best of luck.

Yes, if you’re getting a dealer guy out there get the powertrain software updated to the latest version while he’s there. I completely forgot about the accumulator. Thanks to TC for the reminder. in fact accumulator precharge pressure ought to probably be the first thing on the list to check. Make sure your dealer guy knows to bring a nitrogen charging kit with him.

Whoever had trans accumulator wins the prize. His computer pointed to the accumulator. Installed a new one and problem solved. All other subsequent checks came back ok.

Send a case of beer to Tony... I thought that accumulator was serviceable and would likely require a re-seal. If they sold you a complete new one they saw you coming.....

A few Pints each Nige would be just the Ticket.
