RTO 15715 doing wierd stuff

RZucker ยท 2019-10-23 22:20

A month back I put a rebuilt 15715 in a truck, 1400 miles later it seems like it wants to float the range clutch into neutral when its cruising easy, no problem with a hard pull, or with the jake on hard. just easy floating. The regulator is only putting out 47PSI, would that be the cause? Putting a new one on in the morning to try it again. Otherwise the Big W is sending me a new trans and paying me to swap it.

While 47 psi is low, {the regulator should be set at 65 psi} the fact that torque is keeping it locked in tells me there is slack on the rear output shaft. I think the out put shaft has slight movement. Or the clutching teeth on the high range gear are worn enough that the clutching teeth on the synchronizer hub are not staying fully locked. Does the output shaft have any play fore and aft? The rear output shaft main support bearings and race are machined/matched to the race and cannot be mis-matched on assembly. But hopefully the regulator takes care of problem.

Regulator did not fix this, bearings are tight, no movement of the output shaft in any direction. So I'm assuming synchro hub or high range gear clutch teeth. Waiting to hear whether I can do the rear section myself and be covered by the warrantee.

Weller doesn't normally allow that unless your a dealer. One other possibility is the shift fork is not tight on the shaft or the nut on the shaft piston is not tight inside the range cylinder housing. I had one about 3 months ago that had that very problem, but it wouldn't make a complete shift into direct and it was a RTO15715. Does the one you have integrate the deep reduction with the high/low range in one cylinder on top right? This is the rig that had the issue.

Yep, integrated cylinder on the top right side.Didn't have a chance to mess with it today, had a trailer that needed some crack repairs done. (Same company) See you tomorrow.

Oh, update... Got a replacement trans yesterday, truck's on the road today with no issues. Now to see what the warranty teardown says.

Just hope they don't come back with the usual {driver error} so no warranty reply, that's a normal one for them.

Honestly, in 10 plus years, I've only had one warranty before on a weller product. Had a bitch with them a while back on a steering box that leaked from the sector shaft from the get go and they made that right

Well they just back pedaled on one this week that belongs to the only leaser we have. Installed 7 months ago by a Freightliner dealer and upgraded from a 169 to a 189. 1st/5th gear took a dump while pulling Lookout Pass a month ago, I towed it in to Spokane Freightliner and it was noted that it was full of oil and no leaks. They determined it was low on oil which caused that gear to over heat. It is a box with a halo oil system so that doesn't jive. Had it truly been low {i pointed out} it would have taken out the input gear 3rd/7th first because it was on a grade. Then they came back with the driver was pulling the hill in the wrong gear, My reply {***} you might be pouring coolaid but I'm not drinking. It was very obvious as I pointed out that 1st/5th gear was a cheap aftermarket gear and wasn't tempered properly because the two opposing gears on the counter shafts were only chipped and thrashed from the teeth flying off 1st/5th. But none the less they still insisted in was running low on oil when it took a dump. I was surprised the only thing the boss said during the conference call was toward the end {Fu@K you I spent thousands of dollars equipping new gliders with your parts that's the last} He doesn't swear he is a devout Mormon-they really pi$$ed him off. And the Problem with that is he is friends with the owners of every big trucking company in Idaho and Utah.

On mine they approved it and paid me the 600 bucks to R and R. They wouldn't tell me what they found though.

You got lucky, better hope the next one is a good one. That's the second time for us.

Turn of events-was asked to go to the office this morning for another conference call initiated by the big W. Seems they had taken a second look and decided that the gear was at fault. And that it had not run low on oil after all. And they complimented me for knowledge of Eaton transmissions. Shipping another RTLO18913A to us free of charge and shipping. Will see how long this one lasts. And Weller was bought out by Jasper.
