It's basically a three-way tradeoff between undercarriage wear, traction and the amount of turning the machine does. As you've posted this in the Track Loaders sub-forum let's assume this is the type of machine in question. You need to consider the type of work and its duration. If, for example, you're loading dirt into trucks for months at a time, this will involve a lot of turning and you may consider that the better traction given by single bar pads isn't worth the increased U/C wear. Or alternatively if it's a couple of weeks work and you're being paid by the ton/cube you may think differently. On the other hand, you're carrying material for a reasonably long distance up a wet grade, more aggressive pads may work out better overall. There's lots of variables to consider.

Cmark hit the nail on the head. On dozers where one needs steady hard pushing usually in a straight line single bar grouser shoes work great they also do not carry a load but push it. On a loader the standard for the day is two bar also short bar compared to Dozer shoes so the machine can turn and not so seriously side load the rollers and other pieces of undercarriage with weight on the loader arms. Three bar shoes expanded on that premise where we now see them more prevalent on excavators where the machine may have to side shift or move during high load stress and minimal ground pressure.

SO what would I want for a 953 farm machine that has to dig a large basement, clear overgrowth, knock down and pile up some big trees ? thanks guys

Double bar grousers, you will be turning a lot piling trees and depending on how you dig the basement you don't need it ripped up, you want to put your concrete on virgin soil. Plus you don't need the extra side force on your undercarriage. The double bar will offer enough traction and extend the life of the pads.

Double bar grousers. The only time I would consider putting single bar grousers on a track loader would be if it's primarily a clearing and grubbing machine.

In my experience when you run doubles on soft ground they clog up and you lose the traction advantage over triples, and on dry ground or sand there's not much advantage in running doubles over triples. I often wonder if doubles put more strain on the driveline, as the machine takes a bit more dragging round than one on triples. Over here, hardly anyone runs on triples anymore. (I am talking tracked loaders here)
