Hi all, im trying to figure out what would suit my needs better for building terraces and water ways and diversions in Fields. Currently i use a d6n for most of my work but sometimes it just gets inefficent when i have to travel to get or get rid of my material it takes way to long. Ive kind of been looking at some 615's and think that would be my best bet but have never ran a self propelled scraper before, just a pan but not sure if that is my best choice. I have a couple 4wd tractors but everytime its dry to move dirt they need to be in the field working as well. Im just haveing a hard time justifiying a tractor didicated to a pan as well as buying a good pan when i wont use it everyday. Another thing which you cant really go by but whatever, all my competitors are using pans. Is there a reason everyone is going to pans instead of scrapers?
You can get some larger pans than what motor scrapers can heap. This will make a difference on your bottom line when you bid for jobs at the lowest cost/cubic yard. Other reasons for pans would be Fuel efficiency for the tractor to burn a bit less with the pan vs dedicated motor scraper. Finally, resale value of some pan brands are much better than if you'd try to sell an old 615 once you're done with your job. Those are a few of my thoughts based on your provided info.
Yair . . . Jasexc . Just making conversation here but, looking at you problem from half a world away it seems that with your operation another fourwheel drive tractor could be a back up to those you already have . . . and simpler, familiar and probably less expensive to maintain and fix. I am not knocking elevating scrapers but they are a specialised bit of gear and it can be quite expensive to keep those chains and flights thrashing around and around. I have no idea of the initial costs of course and probably in the US a scraper would be relatively inexpensive compared to here. Cheers.
Good point Scrub Puller . My buddy just got an Ashland 110XL2 dolly type pan . He really likes it . Pulls it with a 4 X 4 150 horse tractor most of the time . http://www.machinerytrader.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=10619479
Well the reason im against a pan is i have a garfield 1150 with dolly wheels and pull it with a 400hp 4wd with triples and i still run out of traction. Scrub puller what you say does make sense but why im not all on board is i could buy a decent 615c with cab for 60k or so or a tractor for 100k plus a pan thats another 30-50k, i feel a whole lot better about letting a scraper set. I know im asking everones opinion and it sounds like my mind is made up but i still want opinions, my mind is still open
terex ts14b's... they might not be cats but they are solid, proven dirt moving fools. And they are cheap, 20k a piece should be nice ones. Being twin engines they can load themselves in nice ground or find a set of push pulls and they can load themselves period.
615's are good machines as long as you take care of them. My rental customers do not and I still get very few calls on them. Chains are good for several years as long as you are not loading rock. They are a little older machine so no computers. Turn the key and go!
Why not hang a pan on the 6N? I'm not a scraper or pan man, but I've often wondered, how would a dozer stand up with one of these new tractor pans hung off it's drawbar? If a wheeled tractor can support one, why not a dozer? Genuine question, and I am expecting a "panning" for asking.
One reason it doesn't travel fast enough and another is an u/c is about 20k for my 6n also to just go down the road and work a few miles I would always need to load it
That's why I like the dolly scrapers . They don't put any weight or strains on the farm tractor that it was not built for . Tractor will simply slip & spin the tires when it needs to . Sounds like you may need a dedicated motor scraper . We have an old Wabco C pull elevating scraper . If I was looking to replace it probably go with Cat 615 or 623 .
Here is what you need and it is not that expensive
Nice combination Don K . I like it ! Something that gets overlooked is matching the tractor with the size of pull pan . We used a CAT # 40 pan pulled with a JD 4440 (130 hp ) two wheel drive and it was just about a perfect match between the two . Tractor had no trouble loading but would slip a tire in a tough spot .
