I saw this on the Web and thought of you Scrubpuller
Great picture Nicky
I've heard of forward control dozers, and seen planetary finals on older units, but... Terex? Fiat? Allis?
Eimco.
Yair . . . Gotcha nicky 68a . (big grin) There is a thread on here somewhere about this very specialised and local form of tree clearing . . . D6 Merv would be our resident authority on the subject and probably even knows the tractor. Cheers.
Somebody let the rest of us in on this... Whangarie is New Zealand, no?
yes is in kiwiland boys; tractors a super modified Terex 82-30 set up for what we call gravity scrub rolling. Basically a lot of our country is too steep to crush scrub going downhill with a bulldozer blade. So people started making big rollers with chopper blades on them; and lowered them up and down hills with logging winchs. Then a few people got cunning and made up these hybrids. There is 2 winch drums, one on each side of the tractor, with independent clutchs and brakes. This is so you can steer the scrub roller. Next put the operator up front on the nose cone so he can see whats going on. Then run fairleads out onto the blade so the ropes run out over them and the roller runs out from the front of the machine. Blade acts like a big brake to hold the tractor. Usually your sitting facing downhill on a skinny razorback ridge, just wide enough to sit the dozer on. And you let the roller go out off one side of you at a angle so you can crush scrub downhill on one swath. Then shift tractor forward and winch back uphill crushing a new swath ! With the independent clutchs and brakes you can steer the roller drum. All the scrub is crushed flat and left to bake in the sun for a few months and then burnt and the land was usually planted in radiata pine trees for forestry blocks. 1970s and 80s were the boom years for this kind of work. The terexs were quite a popular tractor to modify for this work. Another mate of mine used a Allis Chalmers HD16DP with a similar setup. Absolutely awesome to watch them working; can really clear some hill country in a day with them. I never drove any of these setups; but this is me on a D7F with just the standard logging winch setup scrub rolling cheers merv
in the first pic if you look carefully you can see the roller getting winched up through the scrub
this was some not so steep country I blade crushed with my D6D
I though the undercart looked like Terex... some ingenuity at work there!
Great info Merv thanks
Thanks, Merv! Steering the roller with two winches is very clever...
Thanks for the pictures Merv!
Many thanks
Wow I would like to have a go at that
