Shortage of new vehicles…

Welder Dave · 2021-06-18 00:43

Went to a Ford dealer to drop my Cat water pump to give my mechanic friend so he can install it for me. If I feel good enough I'll go out and help him. Anyway I mentioned their lot had a lot less vehicles. He told me the reason wasn't because of covid but because there is a shortage of computer chips. Apparently one of the factories has thousands of vehicles sitting there that don't run because they need a chip for the computer. He had a friend who wanted a diesel truck but was told not till at least October! so opted for a gas model. Not good.

ya, GM dealer wants to buy good low mileage pick-up trucks like mine for resale or trade. RV dealers same thing for class C motorhomes with low mileage and fairly new

  2. #2Queenslander2021-06-18 17:23

It appears to be the same around the world. I just took delivery of a new Toyota 4wd that’s been on order since mid December. Dealer said his orders far exceed the trickle of new stock he is receiving, so his backlog is growing by the month.

  3. #3MarkinMass2021-06-18 18:11

I wonder if they are stock piling cars, that are only missing chips, if they will all of a sudden increase capacity? Weird times either way.

  4. #4crane operator2021-06-18 18:17

There is now a large enough stockpile of unfinished 2021 Ford Super Duty pickup trucks parked outside the factory to be able to see them from space.

  5. #5MarkinMass2021-06-18 18:31

Yup, this shortage may quickly turn into over supply and big discounts. Hopefully

  6. #6_Weldman_2021-06-18 18:56

In the mean time the price of used vehicles is increasing dramatically. Guess I should of kept my souped up Geo Metro, could of sold it at same price it was bought new from a dealership back in 1997.

  7. #7Welder Dave2021-06-18 19:18

Wonder if the 2021 models will turn into 2022 models?

  8. #8suladas2021-06-18 19:57

Can't, once it's built it's far too late. They are going to take a bath on a lot of those trucks. Once they get the chips in there will be so much new inventory they won't know what to do with it. I am really surprised they didn't stop the production line long before they got that many built.

  9. #9mowingman2021-06-18 20:05

I traded in my 2020, GMC, 2500 diesel pickup with 12,900 miles on it. Got exactly what I paid for it 17 months ago. Replaced it with a Ford F350SRW,(which I was lucky to find). Ford dealer told me that Ford has almost 100,000 heavy duty pickups sitting at the factory with no chips in them. So, they can not be shipped out for sale. Jeff

  10. #10Welder Dave2021-06-18 23:49

That creates another huge problem. Do they have massive layoffs on top of there being a pandemic?

  11. #11colson042021-06-19 06:57

A very close friend works for GM, whom is also dealing with chip shortages. He said they had all sorts of different programs over the past year: early buyouts, voluntary leave, reduced hours, etc. He said they even stopped the Cadillac assembly line since they needed the same chip as the trucks, but trucks got the priority due to better profit margins on them. I don't know if the Caddy plant is running again yet or not, this was a few months back he told me that.

  12. #124x4ford2021-06-19 10:58

It’s bad I haul parts for all three major manufacturers most plants are closed we have loads that have been sitting in yards for months because plants are closed and it affects way more people than just the auto manufacturers for every person they lay off there is probably 2-3 more directly affected we have lost over 100 drivers due to plant shutdowns

  13. #13CM19952021-06-19 22:00

Those are F150's. Some of the unfinished Superduty's are being parked at the Kentucky Motor Speed Way close to the assembly plant. https://www.ford-trucks.com/article...-duty-trucks-sit-unfinished-by-the-thousands/

  14. #14AzIron2021-06-19 23:15

Does any one no the amount of time it takes to make a chip waffle in a fab or were the blanks come from that's where your shortage started Nxp has a plant here that has a chip line for autos it was shut down almost 2 full months and my understanding is starting back up had supply problems and chip lines you dont shut off once they start so it can be a real headache and I was told an f150 has about 70 different chips I also know the tireguys got into a bidding war last fall for container space on ships leaving Asia and it takes 5 months to get from there to here so you order a year ahead basically on any raw product that comes from Asia so by this time next year is when that supply chain will level out would be my guess

  15. #15Welder Dave2021-06-19 23:20

Interesting that it said the chips come from Taiwan. So much for the people that want to only buy American made products.

  16. #16repowerguy2021-06-20 07:30

This would be a great time to bring back the 300 inline 6 with a carb and a 5 speed manual. Oh, and crank style windows also. Chip shortage solved.

  17. #17Birken Vogt2021-06-20 09:34

People always thought that chips in everything would be wiped out by some sort of magnetic event, who ever thought that it would simply prevent building anything in the first place. I used to dabble around with chips built by Texas Instruments. That does not sound like it came from China does it?

  18. #18JD955SC2021-06-20 10:50

you aren’t finding much electronic components built here mostly for political reasons. and the people that scream the loudest about stuff not being made here anymore are unwilling to pony up the money for stuff that is made here, so I disregard them entirely.

  19. #19BigWrench552021-06-20 10:56

I would gladly pay double if it meant that I didn't need to replace it in a year.

  20. #20repowerguy2021-06-20 11:29

It would actually save money, energy, and resources.

  21. #21CM19952021-06-20 17:49

Sometime in the next year there is going to be a glut of new 2021 trucks on the market. If anyone is looking it will be a buyers market. Personally I wouldn't touch one of these trucks, good thing I'm not in the market for a new pickup.

  22. #22suladas2021-06-20 17:52

Well I wouldn't touch a Ford regardless Depending how good the deals get at some point might have to buy a new Ram 3500..... But I sure as hell ain't paying over $100k for one.

  23. #23CM19952021-06-20 19:05

I've got a 2019 RAM 3500 too. So far the RAM has been a great truck, it's not a Ford but it's a good truck.

  24. #24Truck Shop2021-06-20 20:07

The likely hood of these vehicles having problems later on-well I wouldn't touch one. The chain of control from assembly line to storage then back again. IIRC-Toyota had a ship load of cars that some how had salt water damage, when those vehicles landed at KSI terminal port in Portland everyone of them went to the chipper. that was some years back.

  25. #25cuttin edge2021-06-20 20:58

GM dealer here has 3 new 3500s on the lot and they have sold signs in the wind shield. A few of those little cars. The ford and dodge dealer are owned by the same guy, and appear to be full, but they are all used. The Asian dealers are full, no pickups though.. We have had an F650 on order, might get it by the fall. They were going to try a ram when the ford guy bought the dealership, but the ford could be registered to haul more than the ram or the GM. I think it's across the board. Been waiting for a new Freightliner M series for a while. Had to get the automatic in order to get sooner. The gravel box and hoist have been in the yard since the spring.

  26. #26Truck Shop2021-06-20 21:07

If ordered tomorrow-Freightliner is looking at a 15 month waiting period.

  27. #27cuttin edge2021-06-20 22:02

It is something like that. They can get the truck they want sooner if they take the automatic over the 8LL. We have one with a rolloff deck. It has a 400 cummins with the auto. This one will be a 350 with the auto. The driver of the 400 calls it a retirement truck, he turns 70 this summer, and he loves it. I had it last weekend, and it backs up fast. It was a used truck they got at auction. 400,000 kms on it, and no issues yet.

  28. #28suladas2021-06-20 22:33

Yea but don't feel bad, eventually Ford will catch up to what the Ram is right now Had a really close look at my buddies 19 Limited that was nearly $100k sure a nice truck, but I can't see paying that kind of money. Shake my head at spending that kind of money on a truck to pull a $150k 5th wheel, neither are making any money or writeoffs for a business. My 09 5500 gets the job done just fine, and it looks like a million bucks knowing it's all paid for. Guess i'll see how good the deals get next year.

  29. #29Truck Shop2021-06-21 00:07

People spending money is what keeps economies going-without it things go flat. Not everyone is a miser. The only thing dodge has is the cummins nobody wanted a dodge years back, if ford had the cummins it would be the other way around. No one wanted a harley years ago either, but it's the rage now. But give it time-just a decade or so and those rams, fords and gmc's will be made into electric motors or hydrogen cells.

  30. #30Welder Dave2021-06-21 00:11

Harley is hurting too. Harley-Davidson posts quarterly loss, announces 5-year turnaround plan (jsonline.com)

  31. #31suladas2021-06-21 01:48

Yea but there’s a difference between a reasonable expense and a foolish one. I will never understand people who will always have the truck, rv, toys etc all financed, just paying for the banks fancy buildings. You could spend 1/3 that amount and have a nice setup paid in cash and have a ton of extra money to invest. Yes and no the Cummins was a lot of it but there is more to it now that makes them a good truck. Nope not happening I will hold onto my ICE for a long long time. Electric is a long ways away from making any sense.

  32. #32Truck Shop2021-06-21 07:26

Not everyone has that kind of cash laying around. Making sense or not the auto manufactures are spending/investing in electric design.

  33. #33Birken Vogt2021-06-21 08:06

They are going electric because nobody knows how to make a good engine any more. My inlaws have a fairly new Honda minivan with 200k that started fouling plugs, bad valve guide seals I believe it is. Impractical to fix I am told.

  34. #34Vetech632021-06-21 08:45

I'm tickled pink with both my Ram trucks. My 08 has been run through the ringer and just keeps trucking. My 18 just hit 92K miles and still going strong. I couldn't be more pleased with either.

  35. #35Truck Shop2021-06-21 09:30

Yeah it's going to happen and it's happening as I type. KW is taking orders on the 270 and 370 models.

  36. #36_Weldman_2021-06-21 10:16

Feel sorry for the guinea pigs that buy these as there will be so many flaws it will take years to iron them out along with lack of ability to charge them. Nothing against electric but as person who lives on a PV system which is pretty close to a EV system I think we are putting the cart before the horse. Upgrade the grid at least quarter of the way and we might stand a chance, the current grid is so flawed only reason people can pump gas is it doesn't take much electricity to run a pump. Take BTU's per gallon of gas/diesel and convert it to kWH and try sending that down the power line for each vehicle at the gas station, get ready for rolling blackouts especially in summer time. If the grid system is having hard time in summer with everyone running their 15A plus AC system imagine what 30A plus will do since a EV will take minimum 15A to charge it plus the AC at 15A minimum (unless you live in a truck camper).

  37. #3756wrench2021-06-21 10:22

as far as the chip shortage, i wonder what stuff like that is still stuck on the EVERGIVEN?

  38. #38AzIron2021-06-21 11:06

Electric going to be a viable option before anyone is really ready to jump to it Tesla is a lot more than a fad now around here in the car buissness Remember before the mid 90s it was rare to see a 4 door pickup and the majority were single cabs auto companies make what the consumer wants cars were not for the masses till Henry ford figured out to make it reliably cheap Inside of a decade electric went from rare concept test vehicles to a viable buissness in car sales Were going to see it happen in equipment even faster especially in the small equipment the push for zero emissions equipment for remodel work is big Food for thought is tesla having a chip shortage problem right now cause in the last month there are 3 more in driveways in the neighborhood

  39. #39Truck Shop2021-06-21 12:19

No more oil changes, filters, coolant systems, emission systems. just for starters.

  40. #40_Weldman_2021-06-21 13:56

Sounds good to me! As I said before when this Subaru loses the engine it's going electric, I will build the system for it, maybe have someone mill me a trans adapter plate, I can do the rest.

  41. #41terex herder2021-06-21 14:00

Its one set of engineering economics when you use 500# of battery to move 200# of person. How many pounds of battery will it require to move 25 tons of product?

  42. #42JD955SC2021-06-21 14:44

That’s the sticky wicket. As we’ve discussed here it’s one thing to do cars or medium duty city delivery and bus application electric it’s entirely another thing to try to battery power something like a full size semi or a 36 ton excavator.

  43. #43Vetech632021-06-21 15:02

I got a quote from Toyota last week on a full electric forklift for a customer that is requiring the Lithium ion battery system. I was told that the technology was so new that I couldn't get anything larger than a 6K lift.

  44. #44_Weldman_2021-06-21 15:22

It’s not just the weight they are moving, it’s the distance you want to move said weight before recharging. Just think before vehicles it took a 1000 lb plus horse that needs to eat at least 2 to 3 percent of its weight when just sitting there or moving a 200 lb person and cover only 35 miles a day.

  45. #45AzIron2021-06-21 15:56

5 years and we will see real market options for minis skid steers and backhoes I am not saying its stream lined or without issues but you are going to see customers dictate 0 on site emissions at a certain percentage you know California will regulate something similar Do I see 30 ton excavators going electric not any time soon

  46. #46Truck Shop2021-06-21 17:55

This discussion parallels another from not many years ago. Wow have you seen that new mobile phone named the brick? It's some sort of what did they call it {a cell phone}? Yeah I saw something about in the news it's just a fad for the rich-don't worry you'll never have or need one it will cost too much anyway. That phone is for important people like doctors and lawyers and your not either one of them. Well it looks to big to carry around anyway. But If I could have one I would only use it for emergency calls-you know like if my car broke down or someone needs help. Now everyone on here has heard that discussion-but they forgot it.---From a Brick phone to a P/C I phone-a tiny computer in your pocket and how long have those been around? Except the I phone is only used for emergency checking of friends on facebook. While I'm typing this there is some nerd in his basement designing that battery everyone is wondering about.

  47. #47Truck Shop2021-06-21 18:25

The power grid in disrepair and not up to the task of keeping vehicles charged? For one fine example/reason. Rocky Mountain Power, Pacific Power, Hathaway Energy-and who owns those? W. Buffet. Does anyone think for one minute that warren is really concerned about who gets power. No he is concerned about investors and no mater what he wants/has to see a 8% profit each quarter. Which meant those utilities whittled down to bare bones to keep warren everyone's old buddy happy. My wife worked for Pacific Power for 18 years, she and her co-workers saw the decline after warren bought it and went to milking it. Now what about that cold snap that happened in texas this last winter-wasn't that all about cheap power also? That was some thinking.

  48. #48Don.S2021-06-21 20:41

I cant wait till i have a electric vehicle sitting in my driveway. Instant heat in the winter and not having to wait? Yes please. Electric heat is the most used heat source in quebec. Our system handles it just fine. Maybe you guys should be mad at the fact that your grid is so poor it cant even handle a little cold snap. All to make more money for the people who already have more money then any of us will.

  49. #49ianjoub2021-06-21 20:48

But one adds expensive batteries, charging systems, electrical regeneration systems, and more computers. All the new add ons have no back yard mechanics to fill in when folks can't afford the dealership.

  50. #50_Weldman_2021-06-21 21:04

You can always buy a spare one then… https://www.iaai.com/Search?url=HRkPhNST1SRaoiT7qImIhpTBzlGnprnB/R38q6JwFds=

  51. #51Truck Shop2021-06-21 21:04

Electric cars, trucks, wheel barrows will all have a life expectancy just like the vehicles of the last 100 years. People just hate change. And shade tree mechanics are a thing of the past, they are technicians these days makes them feel more important-nothing more than a Euphemism.

  52. #52ianjoub2021-06-21 21:11

Iaai is a pathetic joke. I tried to do business with them one time, completely useless, waste of time, and a ripoff if you could consummate a deal.

  53. #53673moto2021-06-22 00:38

I know a Tesla mechanic...I’m sure he’d be down for side work... but I wonder if the software will allow out of dealership repairs?

  54. #54DMiller2021-06-22 05:41

Grid here will not sustain a swap to EVs en' masse, will be a least a decade to revise and replace the aged structures feeding the homes and business in MO before the addition of masses of EVs where currently the novelty use machines are not do so well as to finding charging stations at convenient locations. The bus line here has finally agreed to accept a TEMPORARY substation to feed their charging systems in two garage locations as a test, been explained completely offsets any savings calculated as to EV over Diesel, maintenance and fuels expenses. Asked the REA here if could support a EV charging station on my meter base, said Yes, for ONE, SINGULAR charger for ONE SINGULAR machine, not for multiple cars or light trucks and definitely not for anything bigger as a potential tractor or the Tesla Road Trucks.

  55. #5556wrench2021-06-22 12:01

i think in the upcoming years, battery technology is going to keep improving as well as electric motors. its like evolution of the cordless power tools. look where that has progressed in the last 20 years. its amazing the power and run time on my new milwaukee fuel 18v drill compared to my older stuff

  56. #56JD955SC2021-06-22 12:09

while it’s true there will absolutely be further evolution of batteries and EVs there are also the laws of physics that aren’t able to be broken.

  57. #57Welder Dave2021-06-22 12:56

The gov't. will have to find another way to tax everyone to make up for the lost fuel taxes they take. It will probably be some kind if clean air tax where they totally gouge everybody.

  58. #58_Weldman_2021-06-22 13:11

...and with the laws of physics speed of light is 186,262 miles per second in a vacuum which light is energy and energy is what these vehicles run on. Only thing holding us back is resistance which silver at ohms metres is 1.6 x 10- 8 resistance is least resistant material known to man so far as we are creating new materials all the time. Another problem is ability to store such energy in dense area and release it which is what relaxor ferroelectric does at the maximum for capacitor, problem being it's easily damaged ceramic by the high currents. The future lies in solid state batteries in the EV world.

  59. #59Truck Shop2021-06-22 13:20

    Thank you spud!

  60. #60Truck Shop2021-06-22 13:24

Probably the biggest thing to overcome is societies constant need to be going no where. Possibly things like books and reading will be back in vogue.

  61. #61chidog2021-06-22 13:25

All this chip stuff has me wondering about how this affects the heavy equipment manufactures. All the new stuff is loaded with electronics and computers.

  62. #62DMiller2021-06-22 18:04

Just as bad if not worse than the street machines.

  63. #63Truck Shop2021-06-22 18:29

Well here's one-Combine Tires-some sizes of combine tires are not to had. Talking to local Les Schwab store mgr, he has several farmers who procrastinated on buying early. They need tires and none available. Like said else where on here {farmers are gamblers}.

  64. #64JD955SC2021-06-22 18:33

most of the environmental movement and almost all of the renewable energy movement is about filling corrupt pockets. Other than the true believers at the bottom level everybody else is scamming like crazy. “green on the outside, red on the inside”.

  65. #65Truck Shop2021-06-22 19:22

That goes without saying-name one thing that isn't corrupt in one form or another when it comes to large sums of money or even small sums.

  66. #66AzIron2021-06-22 23:56

Where someone brings emotion into a financial decision there is money to be made by someone else it's just market reaction some people are not a scrupulous as I think they should be but people really want to spend money emotionally

  67. #67Welder Dave2021-06-23 01:34

There will probably be people ordering a new vehicle just so they can say they got one... and boasting about it.
