I am asking for help\advice something i hopes of getting my dads backhoe running again. We have a 580b ck 74' with a G188d power shuttle. My dad got the starer rebuilt put back on then blew a hydraulic line. Got a new one then refilled the fluid amd put a new trans filter in (the one behind the radiator) it fired up. He used it to load a wood stove amd now it wont start. He says it will crank but there's a grinding noise. I personally haven't heard it. Im not sure if this is when he first tries to start it only or if it is constant. He also said it is getting tighter and tighter or sluggish start everytime he tries. He doesmt want to keep trying amd do more damage to the crank and cylinders. Before we spend 1000's on a new engine or rebuild is there anything it coud be causing this? Also it has a rockwell in it along with the bigger bore for the sleeves. We have called the only 2 ppl we kno to come look at it amd neither has showed up. My father is disabled amd uses this machine alot to help him around the property. I have searched amd read amd i am feeling very defeated in helping him. My dad has done alot for me amd i hate to see him unable to do what he likes due to no machine. Any advice/direction/ things to try will be ! Uch appreciated. Thanks in advance

The simplest explanation is that the battery is getting weak, or battery cables are weak. Does he have a battery charger hooked up to maintain the charge? Otherwise there's way too much going on to even make a guess. Could you get a video of it trying to start? Best if you charge the battery first to eliminate that possibility.

Ok but would cause a grinding noise? And i do believe he has a trickle charger on it

The grinding noise could be a problem with the starting motor. If the only time you hear it is while trying to start the motor.

The starter is the most likely suspect, but it's hard to guess not being there. If he has a trickle charger on it, use a multi meter to check the voltage while charging, it should be over 13 with a trickle charger, and it could take days to recharge at that low a voltage. A picture of the charger or the model would help. The multi meter might be needed for checking other voltages to diagnose the starting, but the battery is the first to check.

Maybe post a video so we can hear the "grinding"? it could be as simple as a weak battery and the grinding noise is the solenoid trying to do its thing. Usually when a starter is making a real grinding noise it is either the Bendix not fully extending or it is the incorrect Bendix. Both of these situations will destroy your flywheel. My guess is your "rebuilt" starter is the issue. The two electric places I have dealt with over the years gave up rebuilding starters and alternators. One closed completely and the other still makes hydraulic hoses and switch to selling rebuilds with a lifetime warranty. Both guys I had dealt with for my repair shop for 20+ years. The both told me you can't buy OE parts or even good quality aftermarket stuff for rebuilding. It is all Chinesium junk and they were tired of fixing the same starters and alternators over and over for free. Do you have a volt meter? If so, connect it to the battery and when you try to crank watch the voltage. If it goes below 10 volts you need to either charge it or replace it. Bottom line....post a video and if it is the starter I would suggest buying a proper reman.
