Ok guys, ive been tryin to get myself out of residential development hell and into road construction. I found a company that's going to give me a shot for a day and start me off as an asphalt raker. I would really like to make a good impression! Ive worked with concrete quite a bit but never asphalt. Does anyone have any general advice? Any tips or tricks? Any do's and donts? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Dude - are you crazy? Raking asphalt is the WORST job ever! (except maybe running a 973 with loose tracks ) You know how hot and stinky that crap is....and wait until its 102 degrees out. And the roller is gonna blame YOU if there is any birdbaths the next day. hey I'd rather be a catheter tester than do that job.
:bouncegriHell ya:bouncegri Your going to be a big time looper You are just going to love it all day long I know this site is big on working your way up. But it is hard to move up from looper. Really.
keep the rake clean...its easyer on your back and its easyer to pull the stones off the top if its not all gummed up with cold mix...... raking isnt that bad if the guy on the shovel works with u ,all you'll have to do is level the top off ...it sucks with the shovel guy doesnt spread it out enough and your left trying to push all that mix around with a rake:Banghead
dont forget to take some pics, if you get any interesting jobs. Good luck!
drink plenty of beer! that's how they do it where i work.
They got any openings? :drinkup
Keep it a tad higher than you did with the concrete!
Thanks for the advice guys but they hired on the kid they tried out before me. I never got my chance but according to some of you guys im better off haha. So its back to swinging a hammer for me Anyone in Connecticut looking for a good apprentice?!?!?
Hey....any of you asphalt guys in the northeast want to tell me how much you loved your job TODAY????:lmao
HA HA HA HA:umno ROFL
for hand work and patches rake 1/4" per inch higher than what you want, ie for 3" patch rake to 3/4" higher than surrounding. Keep rake clean, carry scraper in pocket, Pull asphalt toward you then "bump" at edge, raise up your 3/4" or 1" and push.
