Does anyone know where the "screen" is for the steering clutches for a HD6EP Allis Chalmers Dozer? Is it in the belly pan? Are there filters before the steering pump that can be replaced? Any help will be appreciated Tim Perry.
transmission filter is under the floorboards. Is also steering filters [same oil as trans, common compartment] on rear of each side of the battery box, just by the fuel tank belly pan needs to come off to get to trans and steering suction screen; is located on lower front left hand side of transmission. Is very important to clean this. Also check the suction hoses to the dual steering pumps on the engine, and the trans pump above the torque converter. Is also another suction screen on rhs of transmission, this is for the trans scavenge pump.
So I found suction screen on low side of transmission if you’re in the seat would be right side. Is the left side behind something? can’t seem to find it I saw D6 merv is still active on here was wondering if you would respond or anyone that knows. I have hd6 ep brought it a couple months ago pushed for 2 months with it. 4 days ago I was pushing stop to check my phone and then wouldn’t do move looking for things to try. I have no pressure after the transmission filter yes I just changed today and still no pressure or oil
@D6 Merv .......let's see if he replies
aye still alive and lurking ! Sitting in seat; down at bottom of transmission on LHS you will see oil suction lines that come off cover on there. One line goes forward up LHS to steering pump. Other line comes off and up to transmission pump on RHS on rear of torque converter. Two pumps sucking off one tit ! Drain trans/steering clutch oil first. Then remove those pipes and cover. The suction screen is down inside that cover in tube inside transmission leading to bevel gear case.
the screen on RHS of transmission you found is only a scavenge screen to double section pump on back of converter. All that section of pump does is return oil from bottom of transmission back to bevel gear housing. The other section of the same pump that sucks from LHS is transmission pump to provide oil pressure for clutch packs and torque converter
thank you for responding. I will be trying to get that cover off tonight for the screen will keep you updated. Thanks again
I found it. Definitely dirty gonna get it cleaned up tonight and put it back together and try it will definitely post what it does thanks again
So got her all back together yesterday. Tired to get it to move couldn’t get it to move. So i took pump of and sure enough the sleeve that connects pump to the shafts up in the sleeve stripped on the motor side decided to take house off and found pin was bent at well. I am having a local machine shop seeing they can build a new shaft and collar sleeve. I believe pump is fine
Hopefully you can get it sorted out. Is a fine splined shaft that drives pump off the torque converter gears and they can wear. And hopefully you don,t have to disassemble converter to get at that drive gear. Saw a youtube video were some guy in argentina repowered a HD6EP with a Mercedes diesel engine. Machine certainly went well. Would have been one hell of alot of engineering work to do it, and it was well done. Ive got a HD6EP but it will probably get wrecked to keep my other two wet backend gear drive HD6E tractors going. 1965. HD6E 18541
@D6 Merv what transmission oil and final drive oils you running in your dozers? Still waiting on machine shop to build the parts for mine. Read a lot of mixed opinions on oil types
finals i run Chevron torque fluid 50 grade in all of them Cats and Allis EP had torque fluid 10 grade in trans. Both oils are Cat TO4 spec. Some people ran ATF in powershift and trans. Gear drive wet backend HD6E have got torque fluid 30 in gearbox wetback end. Opinion here from 2 mates who use HD6E geardrives alot, is 10W is better, but my steering pump is abit worn and 30 is better when it gets hot. But reality is steering pump needs a rebuild here. D6D and D4E are my main working machines. HD6s are only hobby tractors really and only do odd day here and there.
Hello I did get the dozer running and pushing again. I have the chance at an allis loader parts machine with good tracks and undercarriage. I was wondering it if the chain links our all the same on a hd6? The loader is a hd6 g
track chains on HD5 and HD6 are the same 6.50" pitch; but no of links vary. HD6G will be longer chains; i 'think' from memory 39 links vs 37 links. But you can just cut links out. Final drive gears are different; wet backend to dry backend HD6 s However all very late HD6 ; after s/n 21448 are all the same gears. Us guys down bottom of world can get brand new HD6 track chains and rollers ! Are made by Passini in italy
