The poor old girl has new problems. FYI, its a 1965 Cat D7 48Z6120 with a M/N 6702048 engine. Problem #1: The engine is consuming antifreeze and you can hear it combustion gasses bubble into the coolant system when the engine is shut down. We had the HEM (heavy equipment mechanic back - he has 40+ years of experience) to trouble shoot it. As a temporary fix, he advised us for now to put in Bars Leak in. We're wishing in one hand and going poo poo in the other that the problem is a cracked head (and not cylinder sleeves leaking!) so in the meantime I'm to look for two replacement heads for the motor. Any idea where to get a good pair of heads? Problem #2: The left front track chin plate is broken and worn out! We need a new/replacement one. Any idea where to get one at a reasonable price?
Bars leak does work pretty well, mix it up well before you pour it in, usually melt it into a gallon jug before pouring it in. Cat able to get parts? oh, reasonable price Sportsmens clubs with big iron, nice! I just picked up a JD 644E loader for our club, boy its fantastic at trimming up backstops and driving stumps out of the ground, needs about 10k worth of work in the next year or two and it'll be perfect.
Our club is fortunate to have the D7. The poor old girl is getting needy though. She's done a lot of work for the club, IE: cut in a 300 meter rifle range, started another 300 meter rifle range, 6 pistol pits (#5 & #6 are too small so they're going to be combined and a new #6 pistol pit built), leveled an area for a parking lot, cut in the road to the rifle range, etc. I called H & R Construction Parts and Equipment, Inc. just before they closed today and the salesman I talked to said he'd do some research on what I need and call back as soon as he found the "chin plate" and heads part numbers PLUS IF they were available and what they'd cost.
we had a small little hacking around pit area behind one of the more organized ones, mostly it was a supply of sugar sand when we needed some soft fill, rented an excavator and with some coordinated effort, the loader moved 1800 yards of material over to the full-auto area. 644E is a big machine and can move a lot of material. Is the chin plate something that can be welded?
A 48Z SN comes up as a 963 track loader, not a D7. If it's a 1965 D7, then that would be a D7 with a SN of 48A if it's powershift or 47A if it's a direct drive. There are also military models. It will have a 4 cylinder engine, a D339. The first thing that I would suspect is a hole in a pre-combustion chamber or possibly a leak underneath the metal washer where it screws into the head. It's a pretty simple fix, but you have to get a special tool 5F8353 to unscrew the chamber. They have them on Ebay.
I should have checked my data before posting. You are correct it is a 48A NOT a 48Z.
