throttle item – anyone know where to start?

subdural · 2024-11-30 20:11

Serial Number FHL00707, 2014 CAT 306. There is a nob up in the cab that moves to increase RPM or decrease it. the nob seems to 'stick' or not work all the time. I found the cable that goes to the engine lands in this black unit. I was under the impression that from the cab i was moving the cable, but now i think that its somehow electronic and the increase RPM is from this black unit. Anyone know where they usually 'stick' as the issue is intermittent - but id like to fix it.

the nob up in the cab moves freely to what would increase or decrease RPM, but it seems the engine doesnt respond - and i think this black box.

Unfortunately the controller is only used on that model of 306E and there seems to be no way that I can see of testing it that I can see. From the electrical schematic (which I think you already have, please confirm) the only thing you can test is power and ground between Pins 9 and 14. The other thing is that there is a "power mode" switch which supplies a ground signal via wires R997/R977 via a to the governor control. It might be worth investigating if that switch is working as it should. Maybe look at cleanliness of electrical connections and for the presence of green crusties or anything else that might intermittently affect operation.

ty, ill take it off and clean it all up. the power mode does work, seems to just kick up the RPM

do you think part 379-0803 will work? i found an aftermarket one and it was listed as 306E. If im gonna take it off and cant figure much out, figure ill put a new one on. I tired to use the sis parts system to find the part number, but i need to go to school for that system i think. (sis gives a weird looking part that has been replaced by (525-4479: Governor Motor). this 525-4479 from cat looks exactly what i need.

Before you do that I had a thought after looking again at the schematic. The signal from the rotary knob goes through the high/low switch to reach the black box in the engine bay. If the switch is in the low position the signal won’t pass through it. Could it be a problem with the contacts in the switch.? A replacement 430-6408 switch is bound to be cheaper than a replacement controller. I’ll look at those other numbers you posted above for the controller and get back to you.

i got lucky and found an aftermarket govner for 75$, cat wanted $1100+. if you find the number for the cab controller ill def put a new one of those in too. cant be all that bad. with the good price on the govenor unit as i take the stuff apart to check, figure its not bad to just put new stuff back in there. at a good price like that. the unit seems to be sealed up - factory solid, not like i could open it and check stuff too good. as always thank you so much. its just my side hustle and not profession, and im learning as i go most often. (cab removal for swivel joint on the other machine is progressing too fyi..) just a big project and cold outside now too.

The 379-0803 governor motor has been replaced by an updated Part Number 525-4479. It seems as though the new Part Number was introduced from machines with S/N FHL01318-Up. The former number should still work though. See M0091333-00 attached. The 430-6408 Switch has been discontinued with no replacement. However it does give details of where one can be ordered. The rotary switch assembly is 268-0761. Also has been updated but retains the same Part Number.
