Can someone give the Torque specs for the Bellhousing bolts that hold the bellhousing to the engine block; and the specs for the Flywheel to crankshaft. 1998 Cat D5C Hystat ser# 5HS00484 Thanks

Bell-housing bolts. No specific specification, standard torque for M10 bolts is 41+/-7 ft. lb. Flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts 61+/-4 ft. lb.

Nige: Do you have the torque specs for the composite/plastic? gear teeth insert that inserts into the flywheel- there are allen head bolts that attach it to the flywheel. can't find the specs in the assembly manual......... Finally got the engine out- upon removal of the flywheel, I found that 10 of the 12 bolts holding the bellhousing to the block were completely loose!! Unbelievable. The bolts had completely backed out. My plan is use to use threadlocker on those bolts and then use some rtv on the new block to bellhousing gasket...... Hoping all this was the cause of the bad oil leak at the back of the engine

There is no spec for those allen bolts. It wil lbe standard torque for whatever diameter they are. I personally would not use RTV under any circumstances on the flywheel housing to block gasket. The thickness of the RTV film will give the bolts enough space to loosen as it frets. Make sure the surfaces of the cylinder block and the flywheel housing are clean, dry, and most important of all, flat. Install the gasket dry, fit the flywheel housing and torque to spec. Loctite on the bolt threads would be a good idea but make sure the threads in the block are really clean and dry by using electrical contact cleaner before you start. Personally I would drill the heads of the bolts and lockwire them in pairs to prevent them loosening.

Nige: OK, Thanks. Also I noticed that the 2 locating dowel pins in the bellhousing had been pressed back flush with the bellhousing and were not engaged into the block. Is it important that the locating dowels be pressed back to engage the block? I assume whoever worked on the engine before for some reason pressed the pins back flush so as to make them useless or maybe make it easier to install the rear main seal perfectly centered?

Back in the day I used to fabricate locating studs from over length bolts by cutting the hex off. Screw two into the block and you can hang gaskets and assemble the bell housing by yourself. Snug up a couple of regular fasteners then unscrew your studs and continue.

Yes the locating dowels are important. They are what keeps the housing from moving. Make sure the dowel holes in the housing fit tight or you'll have the same problem again.
