Towing 963

Flhr62 ยท 2016-04-22 16:53

Need to move a 963 30 to 40 yards. Can I just pull the sun gears out then it will free wheel? Is so,is this much of a job, or will they just pull right out and then slide right back in?

Yes, you're on the right lines. You may have to push the machine forwards and back a little to take the load of the gear train. Some, but not all hystats have a thrust button on the inside of the round cover plate which can fall out so you have to look for that also. When you put them back in you will probably have to run the engine and get a helper to slowly drive the track while you push on the shaft until the splines line up. When I give people this advice I also like to issue a standard warning to be very careful when towing. Tracked machines with the brakes disabled like this freewheel surprisingly easily and even a slight slope can make things get out of hand very quickly if you haven't thought about how you're doing to brake the machine.

It is on a slight slope. I will try to get some pictures of where it's at with in a week or so. Need to move it to get the motor out. I'm hoping it will roll as easy as you say.

Depending what your towing it with, or pushing, chain that sucker tight to one another. No loose chains/ropes/straps.

Seen that video of the pipelayer on it's side on a good slope, they stand it back up and the lift chain pops off, she goes hell bent down the hill clattering like the tracks were gonna come off? I always wondered what it stopped on, lol

Cmark is not exaggerating, the tractor will roll like a kid's wagon on a steep roof, even if the slope is almost level. Regards, Clark

The sun gear/shaft will have a threaded hole in the end so you can put an eyebolt in to pull it out. The first one will be easy, the scold one will be a pig when it's taking the weight of the machine. If the bucket is on the floor, leave it there, you've got a ready made anchor. Just get an excavator chained on and drag it by the bucket, if it rolls drop the weight of the bucket and it'll stop rolling.

Sorry last post should have read "second" not "scold" - damned predictive text. Anyhow, doesn't look too steep a slope, but be careful anyway, as someone said, things can get out of hand fast.
