im looking at a 2015 kx80 with 300 hrs, from a dealer. The machine was in the rental fleet. Asking 79000. What would I want to look out for? Any opinions will be appreciated.

300 hours isn't much. I'm sure the machine is fine, just check the basics. Engine oil, if it was greased, track wear, etc.

Is there still one years warranty left?. Its very hard with ex rental machines but that has ridiculous low hours. You can grantee it only got greased when it came off hire but no big deal as bushes can be replaced. Engine oil prob got done ok unless the hire company are real cowboys. Log books would be nice showing 50hr and 300hr at services done. It should have had the final drives done also. The main thing to look for is machine abuse, i have seen teeth pulled out of buckets and twisted Boom and sticks in machines with only a few hundred hours. Generally the weekend warriors that do most damage don't hire the 8ton machines so your prob lucky. Because of the weight of machine and transport it might have put those hours on in 10 or so hires. Look at the general state of all the buckets and teeth and track gear and body work as you get an idea if it has had a hard life. If it has rubber tracks look carefully for major cuts. The Cuts usually occur on the outside and the dealers are cunning and rotate the tracks to put the cuts on the inside so as not so obvious. There are things i look for with the hydraulics but should not be a prob with those hours. Have a look at the chrome on the shafts of the stick and boom cylinders as they often get banged by rocks or buckets from not so skilled operators. If your not shore about any thing snap a few picks with your phone and post them hear. There seems to be a million experts on this site that im shore will assist.

I know this, the last job it was on, was for a municipality and had a mulcher head on it. It also has a long cut on one of the tracks. Asking price is 79000.

Good advice from 007! The more history you know from the machine the better. Take some pics and post them up on the page here. Get some video of it running too. Check out how it operates. It would be better to do a little homework on the machine before dropping 80 large. You'll be happy if you find something that could have been a huge problem. I still think with the low hours, the machine will be fine. It takes some work to really destroy something that big and not too many weekend warriors are going to be able to even rent and move something that big to their home.

Buying used, I always ask for dealer service records. Even with rental fleet equipment, any issues would have been covered by warranty. If the rental shop has nothing to hide, than they should not have any issues disclosing any warranty covered repairs. For a piece of mind, you could also pull oil samples. With that low of hours, there should not be muh they can tell you. (cheap insurance) I'd ask them when it entered their fleet. I'm thinking with that low of hours they haven't been able to rent it enough to make it worth their while to tie up that kind of cash. (the math should be pretty simple)
