volvo has some goofy four bolt bucket pin keeper setup on our EC 330blc. Does anyone know how this should all go back together and why it is built like it is built?

You can adjust the axial play by removing shims on the outside and then thightening the bolts, no need to bang the pin in and out when adding shims.
i still am not sure that i understand. when you say axial play are you referring to side to side "slop" of the bucket? if so the shims that are in there won't do that as they are placed outside the bucket ears. it looks to me like these shims and the bolt setup act to "stretch" the pin. why would i want to put the pin into tension?
the left ear on the bucket have a larger hole and a sleeve in it that moves doesn't it? the sleeve is pushed against the stick with the ring that has 4 bolt holes and you put the shims between that ring and the bucket ear, the more shims the more play since the sleeve isn't pushed in as far as with less shims. adjust the amount of shims so you can tighten the bolts fully. When you want less play just remove a shim or 2 and tighten it back up. Hmm, difficult to explain in writing...... The shims you have are broke, they should be full round.
