Waldon 5100 mini articulated will not dig into gravel pile, while CAT 236 skid will??

Have a question that I really would like some replys to. A Waldon 5100 mini articulated loader 7100 lbs will not dig into a stock pile of gravel while a CAT 236 skid steer 7000 lbs, has no problem digging into the pile and getting a full bucket. Both machines at same stock pile location, but what a difference in performance between the machines!!! The Waldon with the bucket resting on the ground {not lifting the front tires off the ground} the bucket just goes into the stock pile of dirt and Waldon starts to spin its tires and dig tire holes. The skid steer powers into the stock pile filling its bucket as boom and bucket are worked into the pile. The Waldon can not get into the pile far enough to effectivly work the boom and bucket to get a bucket full, it only gets the front edge of the bucket in the dirt. Which amounts to a small amount of dirt in the bucket. As I recall it was the front wheels that were spinding although I am not sure if not all four wheels were spinding. See note below on Waldon axles. The hydo motor is mounted on the two speed transmission and both front and rear Dana 60 axles are powered via yoke connections the front axle from one side of the transmission the rear axle from the other side. Most of the loader weigth is on the rear axle, Deutz engine and fluid tanks, counter wieghts, frame. Front axle has boom, bucket, operator station. What do yo think the difference in performacne is between the mini articulted loader and skid steer loader? The Waldon has two differentials powered by hydro motor. Axles are Dana Model 60, automative type differential axles, loader probabily does not have the limited slip option offered by factory. Axle ratio is 6.17 to 1. It was really surprising - the difference in performance between the two loaders, with the skid steer soooo much superior to the mini articulated loader in stock pile digging. I am trying to get a handle as to why this is the case, one would think that both machines being of the same weight they would produce the same or similair results.

I have installed in the rear axle a "lock-right locker" for the dana axle. Then took the Waldon 5100 to a job. What a difference in performance!!!:drinkup That little loader pushed into the Class 5 aggregate pile like it never never did before. So impressed, that in the fall I installed another Lock Right Locker in the front dana axle. I want a retest with the skid steer, the Waldon 5100 is going to shine.

Put a "lock-right locker" in the front axle, now have both axles locked. it has made an incredible difference in the machines performance, night and day. You other owners of Waldon 5100 loaders I highly suggest you also install the lockers, you will be very happy you did.

Yair . . . lake side bob. It's surprising the manufacturer didn't fit the lockers as standard. As I read your post without them you in effect could be in the position where you only had traction from two wheels!!! Cheers.

Most of the waldon loaders I ve seen we used in cotton mills and inside recycle centers. THey didnt need the lockers. Does the locker let the diff work at all?

A Lock Rite is like a Detroit Locker. it lets a wheel go faster than the driven side so you can turn without binding up, but if one side slips, it locks hard. It works with dog teeth and springs. The bad part is it can overload the axles, as it will put 100% of the torque available to one axle if you are in a bind, unlike an open diff where each axle gets 50%. This can cause a broken axle, but not likely with the limited power available in the Walden using a Dana 60 axle. On a street vehicle, the turning manners are less friendly, but on a small articulated loader like the Waldon in question, it is probably not even noticeable, except for the racheting sound it makes when turning, and an occasional clunk when a wheel starts to slip and the locker engages.
