I'm glad I'm not the guy who has his wife AND girlfriend waiting for him at the surface!

  3. #3Aliate2010-10-13 19:44

    lol is that for real?

  4. #4Slacker2010-10-13 19:50

Yes, it's real. Apparently he had the stones to ask both of them to be there! His wife said no because she wouldn't be embarrassed in public.

Job well done! It's amazing with todays tecknology we can put a camera just about anyplace & veiw the rescue on the internet.Anyone else notice there wasent much room from the ceiling to the floor of the mine .Looks like they just had room to get the door open & closed on the capsule. And boy Howdy! how about the winch rigg,Had a petty good size drum on it to spool up that much cable. It looked like inch cable from the video. But smooth looking, couldent see the strands on the cable.Pretty cool.

Yes, excellent ending for all invlolved. BTW, that was a special cable made in Germany designed not to spin while spooling that length 25c, spinning of that capsule would be nauseating.

Happy to hear they got rescued, finally!

Great to see everyone working together to free them, it was awesome. I couldn't image what they must have thought the first few days....

NASA prepaired special liquid diets for the miners to partake of before asending the half mile journey. Apparently there was some part of the formula that was supposed to keep them from vomiting on the way up. Pretty amazing, and the Foreman who basicly is the one that kept them all alive. They were saying on FOX that he used a dozer they had down there to find water for them to survive on. He also was the one who decided how they would ration all of their equipment from lights to other items they had on them. What a miracle, well done to all involved.

The company that put together the plan "B" rescue the plan that got them out is located here in Houston. They used a new hammer on the rig called a Cluster hammer. Its made of 5 smaller hammers it and the rig they used where built here in the states. They used 7" drill pipe and had to make 3 10* bends like an "S" and got stuck a hand full of times. They actually got stuck so bad they though they where done the last time about 20 meters from the miners. They say God dug the last of the shaft because of everything that happened that should of stopped them. As they got close to the miners they started running into steal braces and they had the minors actually dig the last little themselfs. The rock in this area is some of the hardest and most abrasive in the world. They had some special socks made with copper in them to kill the bacteria and ETC keep there feet healthy. They had some other really cool stuff they had to. There was some amazing cutting edge stuff used in this rescue thats forsure.

Yes I think the cluster drill (Multiple DTH hammers) was made in Pa.

  12. #12stock2010-10-15 16:32

Maybe but the drill bit was made in Ireland

  13. #13JDOFMEMI2010-10-15 17:53

Stock I was under the impression it was a Schramm drill, from PA, and a Center Rock bit, also from PA, here in the US that drilled the recue hole. Am I missing something?

  14. #14Nac2010-10-15 18:37

I think the cluster drill and the bi is from Center Rock (Pa) that what the web page says

  15. #15JDOFMEMI2010-10-15 19:31

OK, I see. The Irish drill head is the one that drilled the small hole they were located with, and all the communications as well as food went through. http://www.clareherald.com/news/3352-shannon-firm-plays-vital-role-in-chilean-miners-rescue.html

Made me nervous when they started hoisting the first guy it looked jerky like the capsule was sticking in the hole, it must have been the satelite transmission making it look that way. Job well done

Got any pics of the cluster drill? I've operated a down the hole hammer before, multiple DTH hammer drill is a neat idea. Would take a lot of compressor to operate that thing.

  18. #18Nac2010-10-16 08:31

Just go to Center Rocks web site and there are plenty of pics it is called a LP drill

Really is amazing what they've done and should be a model for rescue/recover for years. Simple US trench rescue is extremely lacking and dangerous for the man buried.
