I think it depends on whay type of bucket you are using too... a 4n1 or ejector bucket will give you the hight on a s185 size ss.

Get one with the high-lift option. That little extra height makes quite a difference.

I had to rent a Bobcat s175 last week and loaded off a curb with plenty of room. Flat on the ground will also work, depending on the truck.

thanks for the help i am trying to decide between buying a skid or an older loader to load my truck. a loader would work best but for the price i think i can get a lot more reliable machine if i got a skidsteer

How much loading are you going to be doing? What kind of material? Is it bank material (digging it out) or lose in piles? Personally, 3-5 buckets with a loader is a lot more fun and a lot easier than 25+ buckets with a skid, if you're doing a lot of it. If you're loading all the same stuff at the same spot, build a ramp/retaining wall to park the truck beside and that will give you a better height advantage with the skid. Another option would be to look for a box with lower sides, or cut the sides down on the box you have if you really need to.

That can certainly be true. However the selection of the skid steer and bucket combination will be the key to productivity when loading trucks. Example I was loading scraper placed topsoil at a Walmart site with nearly every other dirt contractor in town. I was able to load my Side Dump trailer with a 95XT and an 84" bucket with splash guard faster than the guy next to me could load his 10 wheeler with a 420D. I did it all day long. Cycle times are the key, bucket size were nearly the same in this instance. If you get a smaller skid steer with a small bucket that will be a 25 trip to the truck type operation. Spend a little more and get a S300, 95XT/465 sized machine with a big bucket you will be much more satisfied. Also the ROI will be much higher as these large SSL are much like a small wheel loader, yet still able to get into tighter areas.
