Oh the pleasure of frozen roads. This is a water main repair I dug yesterday. There was only two feet of frost, but instead of the water coming straight up and taking out the frost as it usually does it went sideways and got into a bell structure and went down the street 300 ft. Before it crossed the sidewalk and broke out through the unfrozen grass. When it crosses the side walk you never really know where it is, so you take an educated guess and start digging in 20 years the farthest I've ever followed it was 20 ft. We got it uncovered and knew there wasn't enough water " what now" just about then someone noticed water running down the street from uphill, so we went to investigate, sure enough it had broke through 300 ft. away. So we had to call for fresh locates. Just to be sure we left the first hole open in case it was two breaks and repaired the second location, the first hole stopped running as well. The picture shows the water running out of the four foot deep hole. We where 11 1/2 hours start to finish. Sitting in the cab other than breaking frost it's kinda fun but still a long day.
