Zero Swing – mechanics opinion

samkuntz1 · 2025-11-15 08:41

Can I get someone's opinion on the difficulty in working on a "zero swing" excavator. Something like a 2005 Cat 325c. Is the engine compartment so packed that its a pain to do anything on it? Thanks alot for any responses.

Go to work on a regular swing machine like I did a month ago to change a Fuel pressure sensor under the exhaust on the counterweight side of the engine and you will know what Zero Swing will be like. Lots of jobs are counterweight out or take off a whole lot of other stuff to do simple repair. Taking other parts off such as an exhaust manifold can turn into other problems if bolts break or manifolds warp. Better decide what you need and then be prepared to grunt or pay someone else if something goes wrong. Simon C

Thanks Simon. We do our own work, but havent on one of these. What we don't need, is MORE time on repairs than what it would normally take.

All we have are zero swing. (2) 138’s, (2) 228’s, (2) little Cat 305’s and a 320 . There are some things that can be a royal PITA. 9 out of 10 times if it’s on the CW side of the engine I just pull it. I will say it does make some hose changes easier on the larger machines because the control valve isn’t buried in the middle, it’s on the corner opposite the cab. The everyday repairs aren’t any worse than a regular machine.
