OK so this POS 6.4 powerstroke in our service truck is giving us trouble. It is really low on power and will only build about 10-15 lbs. of boost. Ran our scanner and it said "turbo/supercharger no boost" , "EGR something or other", " #7 glowplug low voltage". Now I know the glowplug most likely has nothing to do with it but I was wondering if not building boost and no power could be a bad EGR valve. It doesn't blow black smoke and has no power anywhere in the RPM range. Was thinking of putting a EGR delete kit in. But don't want to spend money if it's not going to fix anything.
have you checked the turbo, all the tubes, and the air to air?
clean your egr first, doesnt that motor have TWIN turbo's? pj
Egr delete is a must on the new PS's. I'm a cummins guy so I don't have a lot of experience with the said problem. Google egr delete and you will find some answers I'm sure.
Ya it's a twin turbo. How would you clean it? Just take it out and spray it with brake clean? If it was the EGR I would rather just remove it and let that be the end. Just not a %100 sure that is the problem. Mike L ya we checked the inter cooler. Had one of the boots that go from the turbo to the intercooler blowout (one heck of a boom). So we checked that to make sure we don't have a leak. I also thought and this might dated but when a turbo craped out you would lose power and blow tons of black smoke(tomuch fuel and not enough air).
I'm not a PS or Cummmins guy as I drive a Duramax but for sure delete the egr and dpf while you still can... My guess though is a clogged egr is causing it to go into limp mode. This is the route I'd go with-Spartan tuning or SCT tuning, a 5 inch exhaust piping, and a cold air intake. Then the egr delete. Go to rivercitydiesel.com and look around there. You would need tuning to make an egr delete work right to where it would turn the egr off, and it wouldn't throw a code or cel. Talk to RCD as they sure do know their P-Strokes. lol Hope this helps ya out
I have been looking at the EGR delete kits and they look pretty basic and a fair price. It's just the tuner required to stop the truck from throwing codes can be pricy. Does anyone know if installing the kit will just keep the check engine light on or will it put the truck in limp mode? If it just leaves the light on we may just buy the kit and let the light stay on.
when you signed into this site, the main menu had a section for link exchanges, which included a link to powerstroke nation. The guys over there will likely be a lot more helpful than a bunch of cummiins and isuzu guys.
Ya I am going to do that. Just wanted to see if someone had already run into this problem here and could pass some advice along.
Sounds to me like the truck went into "limp" mode. Happened to me before when I had algae in the first fuel filter kept saying I had water in the fuel when I didn't. So could be a sensor is broke or the problem is tripping a sensor putting it in limp mode. Mine is a 08 f550 as well.
Buck you can also try out over on the Powerstroke.org. Im a 6.0 guy, but the 6.4 guys will/should help you out!!
Thanks, we pulled the truck in the shop today and we are going to change the fuel fillter and hope that fixes it. We doubt it but it is a cheap fix so we'll try. If that doesn't work it's off to get beat up by the ford dealership.
They actually make EGR cleaner that comes in a spray can if you wanted to try that. Also i used to have a 6.4 and it did the same thing, going into limp mode. Turned out there was a hole in the air intake line where it goes from aluminum to rubber right by the radiator.
Well we changed both filters. For starters at this point I want to light this truck on fire then push it over a steep cliff. After inventing a few new swear words getting the filter on the inside of the frame and priming the system truck won't start. So we unsrewed the top filter on the engine and it was dry. With the cap off turned the key on fuel flowes in. Put fillter back in and truck still won't start. So tommarow we are going to switch out the napa fillters for motocraft fillters to see if that makes a difference. We replaced the lift pump about 20,000 miles ago on this POS and that might be the next place to look.
how did you prime the system? When you took the top filter out, was there fuel in there?
Ya there was. We cycled the key about 10 times. Today we changed the NAPA fillters for Motocraft filters and no change. You can hear air bubbling in the tank so we know the lift pump is pushing the fuel through both fillters and back to the tank. The truck still won't start so we called Ford. Got a towtruck coming to haul it away. God willing they will drop the damb thing over the side on the way and total it. We are going with a gas jobber on the next truck.
SORRY, The Dodge 4500 only comes in Diesel, not Gas
Seems to me these new emissions diesels hate idling. Our 6.4 at work goes into the limp mode alot, doesn't get a ton of use, always have egr problems. Have a friend thats a wrench in a shop full of duramaxes, same issues with the new emissions ones, all go into limp mode after sitting and idling for extended periods. The older trucks are fine he says, they are converting back to gas trucks too. Another guy I know who is volunteer fire fighter said That a bill was just pass, not sure if its just PA or nation, but emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks are allowed to have these devices removed from factory. Guess its mainly for high idle time vehicles, afraid that one of these vehicles could go into limp mode and then not run when needed. So everyone knows there is a problem with them. On a side note with talking about emissions, saw in a magazine that the state of california now says they grilling your hamburger with charcoal causes more CO2 emissions than new diesels do in a average day of running, or something like that.
Thats probebly true eric if the truck would stays running. We should get a treehugger superstar because our new diesel are the most low emision vehicals on the planet. Thats only because they spend more time getting the gremlins out at the dealer then on the road working.
The new diesels don't like idleing cause the dpf and egr will plug up fairly quickly....
Update. Got the truck from the dealer. Had a bad EGR. Forgot to ask what was up with the truck not wanting to start but all told repair bill came to $600.
For 200 in parts could had deleted it and been better off but atleast it is fixed and back to work. Glad they got it fixed.
