Just got a call. The old girl (3wc1518) has lost all hydraulics. Was told it started to vibrate about 5 minutes before hand. Shaft is connected to pump input and turning. Slip joint appears ok. Im guessing input to pump stripped or failure internally. Heading out there tomorrow morning to have a look. How does the input shaft connect to pump? Is there a common failure point in hyd pump area?
What did you find Cliffy?
I think you might find it's torn the splines out of the shaft, but what caused that to happen is likely a bigger car crash than that.
The drive yoke for the pump is on a taper with a keyway. It's possible that it came loose & broke the key, but I've never seen it happen. I think it's more likely to have dropped a slipper off one of the pistons in the pump.
Yep unfortunately not a key. She s-hit the pump. By the amount of ferrous and non ferrous metals in filters and hoses i think Dieselfit was spot on. Wasn’t to hard to get out once the hyd tank was removed.
At least the broken grease nipple Nige found the part number for will be easy to get out now.
Sometimes you can get lucky & the pump failure is sudden enough that the pump flow stops completely & doesn't contaminate the system too much. Doesn't sound like that has happened in your case.
The fella operating said it started to vibrate for 5 minutes before he lost hydraulics. So she would of got a gut full all right. Pulling down and flushing the whole hyd system is probably the correct thing to do. But my plan of attack is to wash out tank and lines then run high efficiency filters and change after a few days.
For a UHE cleanout filter you need 132-8875
Thankyou Nige. Once again myself and everyone one here appreciates you help.
Finally got the ol’ girl running. She got a bit of a birthday with new pump, universal joints, pump mounts, tank mounts, suction and delivery hoses, tank flush and filters. The new pump was slightly different to the old. Suction and pressure lines where in correct location but load sense and return lines where in different locations. A couple of trips to town later and she is turning diesel into dust again. Plan is to run UHE filters for the first few hours, then swap out for a another set of UHE filters for maybe 20hours. Then go back to standard filters for the next 500hrs.
After a failure like yours the recommendation is to run each UHE element for 50 hours, or until the plugged filter light comes up, whichever occurs first. TBH once the oil is cleaned up you could use the UHE elements as a standard filter.
