1970 580ck – remove differential cover for brake repair

Hi all, new owner of a 1970 580ck. I need to replace the right brake, and the differential lock cover is on top the brake casing. Other than disconnecting the foot button lever linkage, is there any other trick to getting the assembly off? I have loosened the bolts, but got nervous as I wasn't sure what's on the inside. Will it pop off, or is there some internal linkage to deal with? is the mechanism attached to the diff lock case or will the case come off then the mechanism removed? Thanks Jesse

If its like my 1980 580C it should slide off with the diff lock internals coming with it. My diff lock cover would not come off untill I discovered one of the bolts was still in it- there is 1 recessed allen head bolt in addition to the other more obvious hex head bolts.

Like jackleg said above, there is one screw with a allen head, once the bolts are out and the allen head screw, the small housing with the yoke and slide gear will slip off. Then remove the hardware for the brake housing and it also will slid off along with the drum and disc. The drum and disk may try to stay in place and that's ok to remove them after you set the housing off. Most of those machines have been apart several times with that brake system, you may even see on the sub frame, they cut a small notch with a torch to make just enough room so they could remove the housings with out unbolting and dropping those pieces.

That is funny, my machine definitely has those provisions made with the torch. But yes, remove the diff lock cover. It is easy to see how it works, the little spring is intended to keep the diff UN-locked. Even if the parts fall out on the floor, it is easily apparent how they go back together considering their intended purpose.
