1989 D4H hand park brake issues

PEVO ยท 2020-07-22 13:29

Ser. #8PB 01320. Been like this since i bought it. Safety hand brake does not work. Up or down no difference. when pushed down it has some binding and does not go completely down. Looks to be hooked up from what a can see but then i have no clue whats going on below. What exactly is this supposed to do. Lock out shifting the forward/reverse lever and engage a brake or what? Dozer works with lever up or down. Any ideas? thanks

Sorry got distracted working on a water leak for my cistern pump! Anyhow not being familiar with a D4H it took a little digging to find something that may be of some help. Check out the attached file. It has an adjustment procedure and I see something about needing to check pressures after making adjustments. Good luck and let us know what you find.

And here is a page with at least a basic bit of information on how the parking brake work down near the bottom:

try wd40 on all of the linkage and the switch and spray the steering and shift linkage too, I have a d5h same cat but a little bigger mine gives me a little grief about 1 once a year

Linkage appears to be froze up right after first link going down. Just got dozer going again after sitting up for a year plus. Because of covid, i had time to track down issues with diesel in oil (leaking transfer pump). Will attempt to free this up...but for now the dozers moving, i dont want to get in into parking mode and not get it to move (disengage) when i want to use it. Have other issues i need to address with trans slipping under heavy load...but thats going into another post.

on d5h if brake is not releaseing trans will not work right take lever loose and work by hand see if works then you will know.big plate under gear lever in frount of it can get to all of it if not side plate under step.

got into the brake linkages this weekend. Apparently the linkage was froze (rusted up) in about the half way position. Got everything loosened up...now lever goes full travel up and down. And on a related note. In another post i was posting about my dozer stalling (tracks stop) under load instead of breaking traction and spinning. Now this seems to have solved my other problem. Tested by sinking ripper all the way down. Dozer sat and spun the tracks...before tracks would slow to a stop. Whoohoo...got 2 birds with one stone! thanks all

Amazing how a little lube in the right place can do wonders for the operation of a machine!

A bit of lube, alot of cussing, hammering, prying...and coaxing. And finally adjusting for optimal travel.

Did the pages I sent have any information to help with the adjustments?

yes however first linkage at one point snapped at the bottom at the bottom of the first goofy lever(bellcrank) connection that attaches to the rusty frozen cross shaft. So any accurate adjusting was thrown out when the previous owner welded on the threaded bottom linkage. However i was able to take out some slack by taking some angle out of the double bent linkage. I eyeballed the max travel (up and down) of the linkage going down to the valve body...and adjusted to make sure when brake is disengaged (lever pulled up) the linkage is depressed to fully open position. like wise it had no problem engaging parking brake and locking out shifter.(Lever down) ...as opposed to it being stuck half on/off all the time.
