We have a 1999 International 4900. It will run okay for about a 1/10 of a mile then the check engine light comes on and it will barely pull itself with the throttle completely down. Changed the fuel filter and cleaned the little primer filter and it's area. What should we check next? Couldn't find a fuel pressure gauge on it. We just bought this truck.
Might help to know what engine. I'd guess a 466 or similar variant. Transfer pump problem?
Plus guess the first step would be to have someone hook a computer to it to see what is turning on the "Check Engine" light. Don't know if this is one that you can retrieve trouble codes without a computer. Well did some quick check on Google and found this that may or may not apply to this truck: To the right of the steering column is a push button labeled 'diagnostics' Push and hold it in. Turn the key to run. Don't start the truck. The 'warn engine' light will flash a three digit sequence and then flash one of the red warning lights near the top of the cluster between codes. If all is well you'll get code 111 which means the ECU is working properly. For example: flash pause flash pause flash is code 111 flash-flash-flash pause flash pause flash-flash would be 312 etc.
I am thinking he said a 530, but I will ask my husband again.
If it goes to idle it is probably the throttle pedal sensor . If it loses power it could be a few other sensors to blame . Hey us the flash codes as kshansen described and we should be able to help you
I know it's probably nothing to do with this IH. But where I worked we had a problem with a Sterling with the Merc Benz/Detroit. Would start and run then die. Thought we had a major problem. After talking to service rep. at dealer and being told to check fluids and such found the coolant res. to be about 1/4 inch below the low mark. A little looking and found the low coolant sensor was right at that point. 1/2 gallon coolant and it was good to go. Now why couldn't the computer just say "Low Coolant" instead of some kind of giberish that made not sense then the engine stops and code is gone!
Mack trucks do that crap also . No warning just a shut down light for what seems no reason at all
MY IH will do this too. its a dt530E in an 01 4700. I replaced the sensor 3 times before I figure out the float in the antifreeze was sticking and just disconnected the sensor. Truck runs great! You just have to be more than a steering wheel holder and check the fluids.
