I haven't been able to find much out on this but the swing brake on a Volvo I am looking at buying doesn't seem to work(be engaging). Anyone ever ran into this? Is it a big deal to fix?
The swing brake is fairly a simple system. The only two parts that could be faulty are the delay valve or the brake disks. What symptoms are you seeing? Will the swing hold on a grade?
I did not have it on a grade but with the machine running I can push the bucket by hand and swing the machine a little bit.
You will have a couple feet of movement at the bucket with the arm stretched out. The best way to check the brake is with the arm and bucket stretched out sideways on a grade. With a large bucket full of material the bucket can drift a little especially with age.
My main concern was when you swing then let of the control you still have plenty of travel like 20 degrees ...it just feels as if the brake is not working
Dunno about the Volvo excavators but some machines I recall had a switch that would either keep the swing brake off or increase the delay a lot, not sure of the intent but it was operator controlled.
Good day ab excavating The Volvo machine has a negative swing brake that is to say it is as default, release of the swing brake happens when you swing left and right also with arm in. Im not to sure we are understanding your issue correctly since the brake in fact has nothing to do with stopping the machine, in fact there is a short delay before the brake activates (After swing or arm in). The braking is in fact a case of the swing motor changing its function to a pump. The stopping is made by its resistance against relief valve. You can see the braking standard by going to http://youtu.be/gVDRiO8vL-k if you need fix or adjustment information try Excatech.com. Kind regards Uffex
I will definitely do some looking thank you
Does anyone know where to find a diagram/picture of the switches in the cab , the faces are all wore off mine
Good day ab Guess this is what you need. Kind regards Uffex
As Uffex stated the swing brake is a park or holding brake. It is not designed to stop the swing function. If it does the brake disks will wear out quickly. There is an orifice in the delay valve that helps regulate the delay in which the brake comes on. This should be after the upper structure comes to a stop. I would say 20 degrees is acceptable depending on the speed you are swinging. There are no switches to control the swing brake or delay valve. The brake will come on always when you stop moving and will release during swing and arm in functions.
