2005 Pete with C15 Troubles

AllDodge ยท 2019-03-31 16:38

My Brother In Law (BIW) truck has an issue with the truck. Has the CAT C15 motor and has codes indicating Number 6 actuator not responding (IVA). Replaced 2 solenoids and it didn't help. Any ideas?

Does it have the black 2 wire plugs for the actuators (MXS prefix) or spade connecters like the Jake solenoids (BXS prefix)? The plugs have a lot of trouble keeping connection, they have a kit to replace the plug but I don't have the part number at the moment. The only way to tell for sure is to go through the trouble shooting procedure, if you post the serial number someone will probably put it up. If it does turn out to be the plugs he should start to think about replacing the wiring harness under the valve cover when he gets tired of chasing check engine lights that are on because of those plugs loosing contact!

It has the MXS type The more it is run, the worst it gets

Based on my experience with a few of those I would suspect the wiring harnesses under the valve cover if they are original, there are two, one for each plug on the lower valve cover. Change the plug at the actuator, the dealer will have the kit on hand, common problem.

I guess the other thing that happens is those actuators crack the housing so they leak the oil the actuator needs. I can't remember what code that sets. Pull the valve covers and run it watching for oil leaking from someplace it shouldn't on #6 by comparing it to #4. They are supposed to have some oil leaking so you have to know where it shouldn't be coming from.

When he replaced the 2, they came in the kit which he cut the plug and installed the new connector (heat shrink tubing) with the new solenoid.

Ok, might look for cracks in the actuator housing, from there it is checking the wiring between the actuator and computer. I don't have access to my computer to post the pin locations you need to check though.

Only just saw this. Do you have an engine Serial Number and what Diagnostic Code(s) he is seeing..?

Got a call, and he has his truck back and appears to be running good after replacing all the plates. Will be going on a run this evening and hope it will handle the load
