2007 Case 430 – Engine Overheat / Electrical Problem?

Farmer Jon ยท 2010-01-10 12:25

I have a 2007 Case 430 Skidsteer. After warming it up and driving it for about 10 minutes or longer, and turning the lights for the skidsteer on , the engine says it is overheating. The diesel gauge also changes to show that there is less fuel in it than is actual, ie it shows half full, though we could have just topped the tank off. Immediately after turning the lights off, the gas gauge goes back to normal, and the engine says it is operating at a normal range. Any ideas where the problem would be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

overheating I dont know this machine, but the common thing to look for is a chaffing wire going to the lights. It sounds like its shorting out and pulling the voltage down, Im kinda surprised that its not blowing a fuse, unless someone put a resetable breaker in place of the fuse. You you recall any maintenance you did on the machine, before this problem started? It could be something happened then. Look around the lights for bare wires, if you can find the wiring harness for the lights, un plug it and see if that helps, then keep looking at the harness for a bad place. Sometimes (engine off, switch on) you can hear a short, or if its dark you can see it. Get someone to wiggle the light harness and you watch the guages. With the lights on, engine running feel the fuse panel to see if its getting hot, check the fuse for the lights and see if its the correct size. Im sure you will find a bad wire, shorting to ground. Hope if it is a short, you find it before it does danage to the machine. Maybe someone that knows this machine will have a better answer, but this is some common things we look for Good Luck

I am about 95% the problem will be in the console. I replace one in both my 440 and 465. They are about $300.00 but you have to have the dealer to input the hours back on the new console. The console is sealed. I did not have that same problem as you have but on my 440, the glow plugs would not activate and that came back to the console and on my 465 the park brake would not release which also came back to the console. If your console has a small hole at the bottom which in effect is a speaker, than you have the old style console and moisture has probably found its way in is causing the problems. The new style console does not have the hole and is better sealed. Good luck.

It could be the panel as KSSS described. Also check the wiring at the key switch and the light switch. The early 400 series had problems melting these connectors if the lights were used for an extended period of time which over heated the connectors and damaged them and the wiring. There is an update to rewire the light circuit if this is a problem.

The buttons for the lights are integrated into the console which you cant get into.

Sorry about that KSSS I had the series 1 problem and the series 3 dash in my head. Just looked at the service bulletin. The ignition switch can fail due to the high load going thru it when the lights are used for long periods. There is a jumper harness that bypasses the key switch for the light circuit so the load for the lights does not have to go through the key switch on the series 1 machines. The series 3 machines have the rotary switch which is no part of the panel and the light switch is wired right to the battery which is a pain in the but when you forget to turn off the light switch and run the battery down.

Get out of the seat with the key off and look at the monotor . Does it say setup ? If so water has got into the monotor and it needs to be replaced. If this is the problem ill give you the information on how to replace the monotor r. Stansel

Finally figured it out! A remote jump start (next to the radiator), allowing you to jump start the machine from the back of the machine as opposed to under your feet when sitting in the machine was installed by the dealer. The dealer did not tighten all connections that were part of this 'remote jump start.' Consequently, there was a short in (1) connection, that didn't ground the machine, causing the machine to say the engine was overheating, the transmission was overheating, and give bogus errors. Problem fixed after over a year.

Well at least you found it. The 430 is a solid machine.
