2007 Sterling w/ Mercedes Engine

Okay, here's the problem: 2007 Sterling, roll-off dumpster truck, has been having issues. Have pulled codes and there aren't any, for some reason. Orange check engine light comes on steady, and truck doesn't go more than 40-45mph. We don't have any Mercedes software, but I think it's gotta be something stupidly simple. The thing throwing me off is that there are ZERO codes being generated. Problem is also intermittent. Works like normal for 3 days, then does this 40mph stuff for another week. Any ideas?

Can't offer any help with your Sterling but will pass on something we had with ours two days ago. Truck started just fine and as driver walked away to let it warm up while going to a safety meeting it shuts down. Starts again and it runs about one minute and same thing. This time he is in cab and sees the engine warning lights flash on and off before it dies. Also there is a code for a time about 178? and engine protection system. We only have this one truck with any computer controls so don't have any way to read codes if any were set. Called dealer and service manager says they are book solid till next Thursday! He then said be sure to check fluid levels very close. Opened hood to get better look at the coolant level, this truck has the butterfly openings as it was spec's as a snow plow truck, well the coolant level was maybe 1/4 inch below the low line on the tank. Just enough to uncover the sensor! Called service manager and thanked him for the advice.

The thing FINALLY threw codes! Lower than normal voltage for the coolant level, and something about a "Bad Intelligent Device" for injectors on cylinders 1 and 2. Sounds like an electrical can of worms, to me. Thanks for the advice though!

coolant sensors can give you fits!!!! I have had 2 different sensors that would work sometimes & sometimes NOT!!! the first would not throw a code, it was leakin (not very much either) at the plug in on it creating a false reading & trying to short out.. the only 1 I have ever saw leak there also!!

Now that you mention it the service guy at the dealer did say something about shorting out coolant sensors. I thought he was saying that was a way to test one but maybe he was referring to one leaking and shorting out. Did have to replace the water sensor in the fuel filter earlier this year. Have you ever found an easy way to bleed the air when changing fuel filters? I usually change one then start engine and run for a couple minutes then do the other. Last time I changed the secondary and ran engine for at least two minutes no problem, changed engine oil and tried to start it had to crank a long time to start and I had not changed the primary filter yet!
