Cant find any info in manual. The darn bosch fuel injector has went out. Just need to know how to time pump. Its geared from flywheel end. I have not looked at engine yet. Local mechanic diagnosed pump being shot. He doesnt have time to help me as hes going out of town for some time. Im just a shade tree mechanic but i have taken several pumps out before on cummins engines but they all had the push in timing pins. How do i time this one?? Thanks
Bosch VE pump?? You have to remove the small front cover, infront of the inj. pump.. Bosch Inline pump?? lemma know whatcha got..
What dash number is the sk170 ? That will help us .
Ok so i found the area where the push pin is to time it with. Looks like someone broke it and ran an oil plug in it. Or if its made this way i assume you run a long bolt in to lock it in place?? The rest looks pretty straight forward. Somebody painted over the pump name plate and looks like shes been into before. Oh boy!
No need for a bolt to hold it.. Rotate the engine IN THE CORRECT ROTATION until a small hole appears.. They make a plastic timing pin that will "fall in" the hole BUT you can use your pinky finger to feel it.. Just "center" the hole "in the hole".. if that makes sense.. Is there a "lock timing bolt" up by the mounting flange.. should be a 10mm screw w/ a U shaped bracket under it.. IF SO.. once you get the engine timed w/ the hole in the hole {LOL} You loosen that screw, take the U bracket out & run the screw back in TIGHT.. That's what holds the pump drive shaft from turning when you try to get the front nut off.. You know you NEED a puller, don't you?? The drive gear in the front is on a tapered shaft & has to be pull/popped off.. You NEED TO TIME that engine.. I cant remember if the pump drive is keyed or not.. Once you get the front nut off, you'll be able to tell..
I usually try to loosen the nut abit before I time engine and lock pump. The reason is the nut on assembly is initially torqued to 10-15 ftlbs and then you unlock pump and torque to 70 ftlbs. Trying to loosen the nut with the pump locked often slips the lock and you lose your timing. John
That's what I DO TOO Wilson.. loosen the nut before you get started.. Its on a "taper" so it aint goin no where.. I just figured, bein a newbie, I didn't wanna stress anybody out.. lol Then you get questions about, "What happens if it comes off"??
