303 is a combination transmission hydraulic fluid from the 50's and 60's when wet brakes and clutches were first being used, and that was as good as the oil was. I guess it's OK as hydraulic fluid, but don't use it in a powershift 4020, even though that might be the original spec. Can't you get a decent hydraulic fluid for close to the 303 price?

AW46 / RO46/ ISO46 or 68 depending how hot and worn the machine is

The spec for my JD 450B requires it... Howard

The 690D runs over 5,000 psi on the travel circuits, if you love your pumps and motors (and you should, they're boocoo spendy to rebuild), call your local Deere dealer and ask what the CURRENT recommendation is from service bulletins if any. The 690E's Deere switched over to 15/40 if I recall correctly, the Linde pumps were not happy with the Deere hydraulic oil. :my2c

You bet it is! One drum is gonna run you about one fifth of a pump rebuild most likely, but with filter changes, the odd oil sample to the lab, and having the dealer run the 3 micron filter cart on it once a year the oil may last several years. Your machine though, just my opinion.

Hy-gard is not all that expensive. Well worth a few extra coins.

Yep, I was being a bit sarcastic, apologies. Hygard is a premium multi-weight hydraulic fluid with special anti-wear additives for use in gear trains and with wet clutches. The Deere G series dozers for instance used it in everything, common sump from the flywheel to the finals as well as the hydraulics. I use it in 6,000 psi hydrostatic systems as cheap insurance. Pistons pumps and motors have rotating metal plates turning thousands of rpm, operating at 5,000 plus psi with only the oil film separating them from each other, I prefer the top shelf oil film.
