320e egr code

Im working on a 320el cat excavator the serial numbers cat0320ecree00332 and the engine fault light is on, with an 3405-5 code. I was wondering what I should check before I replace the egr valve. Thanks for ur help and advice

    I went out to the excavator and the egr valve was bad. So I replaced it and the light went away, Thanks Nige for the help
