4045 High Idle Speed

hvy 1ton ยท 2016-01-13 21:45

Deere 4045 in a 95ish 6 series is idling at approx 1500 rpm no load. Any load, even hydraulic will pull it back down to 900-1000rpm. It was functioning normally when i started it up this morning drove at transport speed for an hour or so and this developed somewhere in between. Hoping something got out of adjustment and nothing let loose in the pump. Any ideas?

Does it have normal power? If it is low on power, and fast idling, or surging, look for air in the fuel. This may be from clogged filters or line, or a bad lift pump or line. It seems aerated fuel gives the governor fits. What machine is this on?

Really depends on what inj. pump is on your engine.. The early pumps, Stanadyne & Delphi have low idle stop screws.. maybe the throttle is hanging up.?? The newer engines have a Stanadyne electronic pump that is controlled by the ECM .. try wiggling the connector wire.. The biggest problem w/ the elect. pumps is either> NO START or skipping & smoking..

It's in a '96 (I was close) 6400 so mechanical pump. The throttle has been been kinda stiff lately, so i guess i'll start there.

If you don't find anything wrong with the throttle, then attach a clear section of hose to the fuel return, or put a rubber line into a container and see if there are bubbles or not.

Mechanical is much easier to diagnose and is cheaper than electronic.. Just disconnect the throttle linkage from the pump and work it by hand at the inj. pump.. see what that does.. A pump model would be nice to further diagnose it.. just get the #'s off the tag..

I'll be out that way tomorrow so i can check the numbers. It's gonna be cold enough i don't think it'll start, so i won't be able to mess with it much.

I totally forgot about this thread and figured i should update. I went to mess with it after it warmed up some and everything was fine. Hasn't hiccuped since. I"m confused, but i don't know that i should care.
