420E extend-a-stick wont retract

jimcolo ยท 2015-04-02 14:06

I felt a clunk and then the extend a stick would only go out and would not retract even with down pressure. I took off the plate on the end and did not see anything out of place.

Well, think about it; you need pressurized oil to move the cylinder. Most likely you're not getting pressurized oil to it. If the rest of the cylinders move, that kind of points to the valve itself. You could do a simple test of unwinding the hose fitting at the cylinder, just loosen it, and hit the pedal. No oil squirting? Do the same at the outlet of the valve; no oil? I'd make sure the linkage is still intact and attached to the valve, and then it would be into the valve. You do own a service manual, don't you?

You can't get to the fittings at the cylinder without removing the Estick boom and dismantling it. There is no pedal to push. It is as if the piston is loose from the rod, as if the bolt holding the piston to the rod came off or broke. I was hoping to find some one out there with the same experience. Unfortunately I think the Estick boom will need to be removed which appears to be a REAL job. Yes I do have a manual but could not find any helpfull info.

Sounds like you should start digging around the valve; hope that isn't buried. On my Digmore, there is a rocker pedal under my left foot that controls it. You have a lever? It's probably like how you describe it; bolt snapped or the retaining bit fell off. You'll fix it, just spend the time burrowing into it...not many easy fixes on hoes.

That's never a good event when something then doesn't work. Try the simple things first. As Eh said trace the lines back to the valve body and make sure there is pressure to move the piston. Then make sure there is flow. If the piston is loose from the rod, or rod is broken from end ... you should be getting flow & pressure from the outlet side, even if the stick doesn't retract. Does sound like a broken cylinder...
