04 430D. Upper Fuel filter cracked. Replaced it. Turned key on 30 seconds. Cranked 20 seconds. Repeat. Gave a little go go juice. Fired up and ran great for 30 minutes. Then bogged down and died. Now won’t start. Switched one battery cause terminal was melted. Pulled lower filter off and it is half full. Upper filter half full also. Left lower filter off and cranked to see if fuel would come out and nope. Wire broken off a sensor in front of injection pump, next to water pump, temp sensor? Dead with a lot added bucket in my driveway. Need some direction. Thanks
Welcome to HEF, Akrancher ! A serial number of the tractor is needed to get accurate guidance with your problem. John Deere I assume ?
CAT 430D backhoe.
Need a Serial Number (last 8 of 17-character PIN) as well as a model number to look at how the fuel system works.
Post a photo of the area to help with identification.
Got power to all fuses. Power to what I believe is the fuel shut off on top of injection pump. Clean empty lower filter put on and drains fuel(assume pump is going its thing).
The shutoff solenoid is #2 on top of the injection pump. If you have power to it with the key on (and no power with the key off) then it would appear as though it is working correctly. To be honest your comment about filters being only half full of fuel suggests a blockage somewhere between the tank and the filters..
Turn key on and momentarily crank engine and release with ignition still on. You should hear lift pump running. Had numerous pumps fail causing this exact symptom.
It's a mechanical lift pump Cliffy.....
Thanks @Nige . The D’s i worked on had a electric lift pump that screwed onto the filter head where that cap is. My money is now on a fuel blockage. I would blow lines back to tank. Often there is a gauze strainer in or around the lift pump as well.
No worries mate. That's why I asked for the machine S/N to check exactly what type of fuel system it had on it.
Each one of the rubber ferrules on the lines to the filter ( 24B in the picture) can cause a suction side air leak. Sometimes they don’t like to be reused and should be replaced if you have had the filter base apart. Also make sure you have all the seals on the primary filter installed. Especially the one on the water separator bowl.
