tips on installing a water temp gague on a jd 544d
Not a JD dude but there pretty much all the same, either mechanical or electrical. Are you saying you don't have one and want to install one, or it does not have one? Most are installed in the thermostat housing between thermostat and engine block
thanks-there is no sending switch in stat housing-one in back of cylinder head but no sure if for temp.
Do you have a gauge? If you don't, the switch/sender you most likely see is for the idiot light. If there is another plug close by, use that for your gauge sender. It really doesn't matter where the sender goes exactly as long as it's as high on the engine as possible, and it's on the engine side of the thermostat.
I you can find a 1/2 inch pipe plug on the thermostat or engine block up high as shimmy1 mentioned, with 1 1/2 to 2 inch space behind it you can install a mechanical gauge. Link below http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-7-120?seid=srese1&gclid=CLq73cvX88ICFQmqaQod4lQAaw If the plug is there and not enough space behind it for the long probe of the mechanical gauge you can install an electric. Link below is just a sender type, you would need kit with gauge and run wires http://www.summitracing.com/parts/smp-ts6/overview/ Let us know what you find and we can assist
thanks-it has a gague but does not work-has a sender in waterpump housing and the wire from it goes to a 2 spade terminal sender in the top of the housing where the oil filters are-only other sender is on back of cylinder head-new machine for me-544d to me is not very typical as getting from gague to engine is not at all in plain sight-maybe someone that has one knows what is what.thanks again.
The pic above is the typical electric gauge wiring. For a two wire sender one wire would go to ground from the sender, the other would go to the gauge
what is the sender in waterpump housing that goes to sender in oil filter housing.thanks
Sorry but that doesn't add up unless someone has missed wired something. Have a pic to see what your looking at?
I know jack about the machine but all the older JD tractors up to 1993 with French built engine had temp sender on the head at the flywheel end
