Hello all! Family member has a 580 C backhoe and for some reason it's making a popping, grinding noise when traveling. I figure it's the ring gear or the brakes. It's definitely coming from the rear axle area. I've been told the bolts that come with the rebild kits or whatever will break and the guy that used to do that kind of work here died (RIP) any thoughts? if the bolts will hold up that would be great I just dont want to tear into this thing in the wrong place. 580c trans Bear, i would do a few quick checks,(1) check the rear rim bolts at the axle,they may be loose or a cracked rim,(2) put the stabs down raise rear wheels off the ground and place a bar under the tire and lift up this checks the outer wheel bearings, (3)the trans rear end holds 5gal lube and there is a drain plug near the rear, drain the lube and remove the rear inspection plate, you can see the bull gears, ring gear, side gears,(4) you can remove the differantal lock on the rh brake housing check for movement and possible broken shaft,(5) it takes less than 10 min per side to pull and check your brake disk,drum, bands. It's not real hard to check out note # 3 most have never changed there lube in the trans/rear, 5gal lube and a tube of blue glue and you can look inside, #2 there is a grease fitting on the end of the axle housing have they been greased. i would say it's brakes but the pop noise could be sticking diff lock or a gear tooth, brake ban lining/cross shaft/parking brake cable? (you are the eyes and ears need more info on repairs) did they replace the ring gear&p. more later!

I had a similar problem and liek mentioned above was athe parking brake cable making contact where the bracket had broken a few tac welds and she was quiet as a lark
