580 k rear engine seal??

sport20 ยท 2011-08-12 03:04

hi i'm new to this site so hello to eveyone. i bought a case 580k which has 9000 hrs on it. i started doing some much needed maintenance. changed trans/hydraulic cooler in front, replaced all seals on 4 hydraulic cylinders. i took out bottom drain plug on torque converter housing and quite a bit of oil came out. i don't think there is supposed to be oil in the housing. do anyone know what might be leaking.maybe a rear engine seal.oil is black so i'm thinking maybe rear seal. is this a big job to replace. this is a phase 3 case with the shuttle being associated with the transaxle. any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

Welcome Sport20! There usually isn't a plug in the bellhousing on a hoe, someone has put that in to hide the leak. The phase 3 is probably the easiest model to replace the rear main seal on, you will have to drain the transmission oil to carry out the job. Probably a good idea to replace the seal on the charge pump & when the torque convertor is refitted, run a dial gauge on the spout to ensure it is running true to about .004"-.006". A wear sleeve kit may need to be fitted to the crankshaft - genuine Case or Cummins If the oil has been in the housing a long time, even transmission oil will darken up with dirt in the bellhousing, may pay to run the machine for a while without the plug in it to be sure of the colour oil leaking.

thanks alrman i did run with plug out and looks like motor oil. i have the rear seal and wear sleeve ordered. do you have a part# for the charge pump seal. also you seem to have a good knowledge on these tractors, what is your opinion on the transmission of the phase III. i been hearing some horror stories about them. are the stories true. thanks

(item 15)seal # A186708 (item 11) pump gasket # 238-5255 You can get the seal from a bearing supply if more convenient - CR533494 (viton) It's not really needed to change the pump gasket - as you can change the seal without removing the pump, but if you want to........ There were alot of problems with early versions of the transaxle. But if any warranty repairs have been done to it - upgraded parts were most likely fitted & if that was done they are pretty good. I can't remember all the mods, a few were: 1) They had problems with brakes getting hot - new ventillated backing plates were fitted. - The housings will often be damaged at the brake piston sealing area - over here we repair them by a electro-chemical metalizing/plating treatment. 2) Crownwheel bolts shearing - upgraded bolts 3) No lube oil getting to park brake - modified bolt on pinion shaft. 4) Plugs coming adrift in control valve - 5) Outer axle bearings failing - quality bearings fitted 6) common fault but not a mod is the 4wd selector fingers wear excessively & the selecter collar moves around where it wants & you can't select 4wd & the park brake discs wear abnormally quickly from dragging on the backing plates BTW never angel gear a phase 3 - the pinion shaft is oil pressure lubricated & if it is run down a long hill with no revs - 4th gear gets REAL hot & welds itself to the shaft & when you engage any other gear - it locks up the tranny. If you happen to be on the move & try to get 3rd - it makes a real mess of things :badidea PS - I just re-read this post & it may look like the phase 3 is a bit of junk (information overload! ) But really guys if you own one of these, don't worry - they are probably a better transaxle than what was in any Case hoe before that time. :drinkup
