580 K transaxle no 1 & 2

Have been reading my new service manual, in section 6002: troubleshooting it asks if driveshaft turns with transaxle in neutral and shuttle in forward & reverse. I checked and it does, it also asks about shuttle in neutral i checked and it does. Then goes on about checking clutch psi, cut out solenoid, and dual regulator valve. Before having this done??? I guess my question is would any of these things make the shifter feel as if it is not connected to anything. I can feel it go into 3 & 4, nothing in 1 & 2 i can see the shaft moving. Hope i'm not confusing everyone. THANKS, JERRY

You have a mechanical problem Jerry, not a hydraulic one. Pressure checks are just giving you some diagnostic practice. Get under the machine & look at the linkage movement. Does everything move as it should outside the housing? Does the 1st/2nd selector shaft rotate with the lever/linkage? If all looks as it should on the outside, you need to remove the transaxle from the machine, sit it vertical & remove the front cover - in order to see your problem.

alrman, thanks for the reply. Everything looks fine on the outside, linkage is turning shaft in transaxle i'm convinced i'm going in. Please allow me two more questions, while i have the transaxle apart should i install new clutch plates. Is there anything else i should replace. thanks again to everyone, will let you know how this ends up. JERRY

You will likely find the park brake discs to be worn, possibly the actuator as well. Look at the 4wd selector fingers, they might be worn. The shuttles don't usually give much trouble. So you may get away with that. While it's out, I would remove the axles & inspect the brakes & reseal the pistons. If you do remove the axle housings - one bolt is shorter than all the rest - note it's location to refit correctly. The axle housings are heavy! Hold them with lifting equipment when you undo all the bolts or support them with blocks, till you you figure the lifting balance point. There are shims on the pinion shaft - end plate, just refit them. No special tools come to mind.

You could have two things going on with your machine One you could have a stripped coupler where the drive shaft goes into the transaxle, if you have a 4wd. Second you could have a broken 1st,2nd shift fork inside transaxle, does machine try to pull in 3rd gear? The drive shaft turning just means that the torque converter and charge pump is working.
