580C Blown engine?

Guys: need your help. Friend just purchased this machine after it sat for 1 1/2 years. Started it, ran fine. Working his drive, it started blowing oil/antifreeze from underneath the valve cover, and from the joint between the head/block on the manifold side. Antifreeze is in the oil pan. He pulled the head without checking compression first. See no perceptible leak in head gasket, or in cylinders. Does this engine have sleeves? It is a diesel. He is going to have the head checked out. Any other suggestions? Also, on the drive home with it, he said that it did start to heat some, but he stopped and let it cool. Afterwards it did not heat again, so he figured the thermostat stuck, then opened. Thanks for help or suggestions. Mark

The 207 engine that should be in it has cylinder sleeves. About all you can do now is wait for the report on the head. Head gaskets can sometimes be leaking and be very hard to visually see where the leak is when looking at it. here is a link to the online parts manual -------> http://partstore.casece.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr49912ag42693

Ditto what Tinkerer said. It does sound like a head gasket to me. I just went through this on my Jeep. No perceptible flaw in the gasket but a new one fixed it.

There are some freeze plugs in the head which could allow coolant to enter the oil pan. If it got hot.... my money is on the liner seals, possibly a pin hole in a liner. How hot did it get?? How much coolant did it lose?? If the coolant level dropped below the temperature sensor in the head, the gauge will have nothing to sense & show the temperature to be cooling. Check liner protrusion also, this is a common issue with the older Case engines. If the cylinder head report comes back OK, remove the oil pan & look for coolant stains coming from cylinders. Fill the block with water & watch if any leaks out into the oil pan area.

Thanks guys. Airman - He didn't run it til it got hot. All fluids were checked and topped off before starting. No water in oil before starting. I am thinking gasket or liner seal as well. Will update when problem is found. You guys input is much appreciated.

Update to problem. Head was checked and 3 freeze plugs had enough rust to cause the problem. All were replaced, head just barely shaved to make sure it was true, checked out fine.

Thanks for the update. Nice to hear it was simply freeze plugs. I hope you took a good look at the ones in the block. New antifreeze too I hope.
