I have a 580c. Pretty much a farm tractor. The problem is it will roll in gear then the left rear tire will lock up tight. It will do this in forward or reverse and at varied distance. sometimes you can travel a couple hundred feet sometimes two feet. Anybody have this happen to them?
I would pull the left hand brake housing and check the drum and disc, it's more than likely toast with gear lube and the linings/bands worn out. Remove the two 1/2" bolts and two 1/2" nuts from the brake housing, remove the clevis pin from the parking brake shaft to the lever arm on the housing top, unscrew the brake line at the slave cylinder. Slip the housing off the backing plate and shaft. The drum and disk may come apart and some brake dust and crud so wear your safety glasses and don't get under it. It's a little heavy so be ready. You could have other issues but that is where I would start, you can put the housing back on with out the drum and disc and test it some more if need be. Do not drive the machine without retaining the backing plate with the housing or installing some bolts and nuts to hold it tight to the trans housing. These machines have a hard time with the brake system and just touching the brake or it rolling along with the lining loose/broken up will cause this. More info if needed once you have it apart. You need a 3/4 wrench, 7/16 wrench, 3/4 socket, pull handle, wire cutter and vise grip, takes around 10 min to take off once the little clevis pin is out.
I haven't had or used brakes in years I'll check though thanks any other thoughts on this issue?
Do you use the parking brake ?. Every time the parking brake is applied or the foot brake it can self adjust the brake linkage to tighten up the linkage to the bands, this would be rare since most get stuck and don't adjust or the adjusting nut has had a 3/8-24 nut installed to keep it locked to keep the adjustment from tightening up. You can start at the rear wheel on that side, put the stab down and pick the wheel up off the ground, use a bar to pry up on the wheel and push it in or out, have you ever greased the outside axle bearing on your machine ?. Have you pulled the dip stick in the floor and checked the trans/rear axle lube level ?. With the machine off and trans out of gear can you spin the wheels by hand and hear any clunking noises. Outside axle bearing, inner axle bearing, bull gear, side gear and bearing, spider, ring and pinion, cross shaft and thrust washers and the list goes on. The rear has a plate on the back that can be removed to look inside it, the trans holds 5 gal of gear lube so have two buckets ready if you want to take a look inside. You have to remove the floor plate to remove the shifter tower to get a good look inside the trans if you go that way but you will gather more info from the rear being able to look inside where most problems happen like loose crown gear or broken teeth. You can both brakes and diff lock on the rt side and secure the backing plate and test also. I would slip the wheel locking side brake housing off first myself, if the issue is internal it will have to come off anyway and you can gut it since you don't use them anyway. I like machines that have working brakes, you never know when you may need them in a pinch.
I had a similar problem on my 580D. Mine was left side. I already took out all of the parking brake guts. I pulled both brake housings, replaced the seals and all new brake assemblies. Worked fine for two months, and then left started to lock up in forward and reverse. Tried everything, BUT did not replace the small retainer springs in the brake housing that put tension on the shoes to keep them off the drum. Put new springs in and have had no problem afterward. Go figure. Was in those brakes four times and they are definitely heavy while laying on the ground reaching up.
