well ive done alot of reading here and its alot of help i have a 580d backhoe that im having problems with i traded for this backhoe with intent to dig for a basement house i got the backhoe with water in the oil turned out to be freeze plug in the head guy told me he didnt run once they seen the water in oil so i pulled head and resufaced it had all redone at machine shop put back oh with new head gasket ran for about 10 min and fried the crank so i started over rebuilt the motor everything new sleeve pistons rings crank crank gear you name it only thing thats original is the block and the the cam shaft even replaced the crank gear did everyting buy the book 30w oil on everything when putting it back together torqued everything in order well to the problem during break in ran great started burning oil out the blow by tube on the valve cover not blow by with pressure like a ring just like sticking a hot rod in oil and it smoking out i changed the oil it had some metal dust in it and put new filter ran a while no more metal in oil but at idle or low rpms it smoke and burns oil only out blow by tube nothing burning out exaust at high rpms or full throttle burns very little to no oil is this normal for break in or should i pull this motor back down again it also isnt running at this time i believe it to be the injector pump though i new i had to replace it anyway still turn over like a new motor just not getting fuel any ideas sorry for the poor typing in not much of a computer person
If you tore it all down for this rebuild I hope you had the block boiled and magnifluxed and tested for any cracks and leaks. For your blowby and metal in the oil issues, I would venture a guess that you installed the rings or a ring on one of the piston(s) backwards. It is also possible you got the wrong size bearings on the crankshaft. The only way your ever going to know is to tear it down again and inspect it, but any metal deposits after a rebuild is a disaster waiting to happen. Something went wrong and this metal dust is enough to destroy any and all bearings it comes into contact with in the oil passages.
580D Backhoe problems. I agree with Russell %100. Something is wrong, like he said I hope you had it magna fluxed, also could be ring problem or main bearings . If it tossed crank bearings I hope you had it line bored or at least checked for straight. Did you plastigage the rods and mains when you assembled? Machine shops are not perfect. One more thought on the metal....did you put the rocker bolts back in the same position because on the 188/207 one of them has an oil hole for the rockers. I'm sure you would hear it clatter if that was the problem.....but again just a thought. Hope you resolve your problem. Cheers
This is an interesting post. Typing is not a problem mirrocraft, we can work with it. Let me see if I can clarify one part, "...started burning [smoking] oil out the blow by tube on the valve cover. Not blow by with pressure, like a ring [broken], but just like sticking a hot [steel] rod in oil and smoking it out." I think I understand what your saying. The smoke that was coming out the crankcase vent was not smoke being blown out by pressure, it was a light smoke coming out that had a distinct "burnt" smell like if you dipped a red hot steel rod into a bucket of oil. If I read this right, that sounds like something with some serious friction going on. I'd be real suspicious of the crank. I don't know if you did this, but I thought I'd throw it in here; whenever your installing crank main and connecting rod bearings, with each bearing you install and torque, always turn the crank by hand to make sure the bearings is free without friction. If you torque one down and the crank becomes hard to turn, you better back up and re-fit or figure out what's causing it to be hard turning. I believe I would take the oil pan off, or even tear it back down, before you destroy something. Keep us posted.
thak you everyone and atcoequip i cou.dnt have explained it better my self i agree with all and am going to tear back down its what i was thinking and was hopeing i was wrong i will up date with what it was in a few weeks after i get it apart
up date i havent gotten the motor out yet but have been talkng to my machine shop we have figured its going to be a main bearing to the best we can figure until we get it out and apart going to re line boar and check crank for striaght shop seams to think since its a bran new crank not the original it may not be striaght bad part is to line boar i have to tear the motor completely down again that sucks i will keep updatine as i get through this all the motors ive rebuilt and i know its going to be something i missed
mirrocraft, I hate that you've had the problems. But if you turn a wrench, sometimes lessons are learned hard. Lord knows I've had a few over the years. It's all the same if you build engines, operate a crane, drive a truck, dig dirt with an excavator, etc; they're all a skilled craft. And I've always said; the thing that seperates guys that do a skilled craft with the ordinary laborer with a shovel in his hand is that when we screw up, it cost a heck of a lot more money! Just remember, when you get your internal problem resolved and put the engine back together, the last part you want to install is the injectors. This allows you to turn the engine over by hand without compression to check that everything is turning free. That one little check can save you a ton of money.
ok it was a nice day out to day so i pulled the motor and took it down i spun 2 main bearings and scored one sleeve to my luck it didnt tear up the new crank still smooth and shiny im going to have it checked for striaght and polished anyway im going to have the block re gone though by the machine shop and have him replace the sleeve that was scored the piston and other sleeve havent even broken in yet so im hoping its not to expancive of a repair im also going to have to get new head gasket and oil pan gasket /// you wouldnt have believed it had a spun main took the head off and turned it over by hand just as if noting was wrong go figure
Sounds like you shut her down before things got really ugly! Hope everything goes together good this time around. You do have a working oil pressure gauge on the machine, right?
dummy light but it will have a gauge before it goes back in and starts up this time this is getting expansive i like working on things better when im spending someone elses money lol
