580D delayed shut down

CJ5 · 2025-02-08 14:20

I have a 580D with a Stanadyne DB 2 pump. i am an amateur mechanic . Does the entire pump need to come off and sent in for a rebuild or can the shut off be serviced with the pump on the machine?

Hold on there partner, how about some more details about your shut down/pump issues before you start pulling pumps and stuff. Maybe something more simple and less costly in your future. Think all D's have shutoff solenoid and yours may be serviceable. Ask some questions. Really knowledgeable answers may follow.

The solenoids are rarely the problem.. Take the fittings off the top cover.. ALL THE FITTINGS.. Now start the engine and see if it shuts off.. Fuel WILL come out of the hole in the top cover so be prepared for that..

I verified the power cuts off to the top of the pump instantly when the key is turned off. Don’t see any solenoid external to the pump. One trusted person told me I had to pull the pump and get a full rebuild. Saw a YouTube that for a similar pump only the top cover had to come off for repair. suggestions?

it looks like that is just one line to disconnect. i'll try that next saturday. Should't be too hard to control the fuel. if it then shuts off, what does that indicate?

If the solenoid is sticking, it’s probably because of rust on the plunger.?? Just remove the return line from the cover, the wire going to the solenoid (11/32) & the 3 screws holding the cover on (5/16).. DO NOT BREAK THE SCREWS.!!!

A trick that people use on the old diesel truck I drive is to pull the fuel filter off, pour it out and then fill it with automatic transmission fluid. Screw it back on, get the engine started and run it for a minute or two and then shut it off and let it sit for a few days. The atf in the pump can loosen things up if they are sticking. Another verification on the power is to get the engine running and then pull the wire off the injection pump. If it keeps running then that verifies it is inside the pump. If it cuts off right away, I have seen sometimes people wire a GM alternator up on the tractor, and they wire the excitation wire to the ignition switch with all the other wiring. The excitation wire from the alternator will tend to generate a small voltage and the keep things running a little bit before it finally dies.
