Hi there - Just trying to clean up a 1990 580k backhoe that i recently bought. Lights weren't working so starting looking at electrical system and panels. When i open the accessory fuse panel in the cab there is a wire "rigged" from fuse 1 (fuel shutoff solenoid) to fuse 6 (return_to_dig and clutch cutout). Any idea why someone wired it this way? As you can see the wire has a fuse in between it.....don't want to remove it because obviously someone rigged this way for some reason. Picture attached as words cannot explain this..... Any help appreciated Ron
The hot wire to the #6 is dead and they are jumping it. Power goes left side of the fuses then feeds to the right side. Most of the K's had elect connect issues in the the fuse block area along with harness connects over the rear axle and along the frame rt hand side, it's not uncommon to find jumped wires and connects due to the cost to replace the harness. Some will hide the jump behind the fuse panel by useing another slot. There is several posts on here about elect issues with the K's.
Ah - interesting.....make sense. Thx Sheepfoot - this is great info
Seeing this makes me suspect this could be your fuel problem also. Check for 12 volts at the solenoid on the pump. You may have disturbed the connection at the fuse block.
Bill - one question - when you say electrical problems particularly with the harness over the rear axle - do you mean the wires just get corroded? If you need to replace the harness what's invovled? Is it a whole series of wires that need to be disconnected/connected? I'd like to fix it properly if i can....
All of them have connections, male/female block almost like the small trailer 4 plug on the back of your truck except it's like a nine pin/six pin connect. The male and female corrode to the point they will not carry current or they crumble if you try to pull them apart. Also alot of the fuse block's will melt at the fuses due to the heat because of poor contact. I would first unbolt the fuse block and check the wire going to the #6 from the rear to see if it has current there, it may be the spades that hold the fuse came loose at the wire end. There are several harnesses on the k's that make up the whole elect system, they can be over $ 1500.00 when you get into them, that is the reason most people splice around problem spots.
Sheepfoot covered it very well in his post. The only wire under mine I have had to deal with was the one that got ripped off the fuel gauge sending unit. When the wire is off the gauge reads full and you run out.
