i put a new fuel injection pump on my backhoe,it will only start with starting fluid. white smoke comes out the exhaust. good fuel pressure comimg out the 5/16 bolt hole on the injector pump, also the injectors. why will it not stay running
Which pump?? CAV.. are you loosing power to the electric shut off solenoid?? White smoke at cranking is usually timing.. raw fuel.. Did you have the injectors done w/ the pump.. why not?? The pump just puts fuel TO THE INJECTORS.. The injectors hold the pressure and squirts it into the engine at the proper time and pattern, to burn properly.. Did you do a compression check.. is the engine spinning over fast enough to start.. The engine relies on HEAT to start.. if the engine isn't spinning fast enough to create the heat.. you'll need starting fluid to help.. Just a few things to check.. Did you change the filters?? do you have the orings on the filter in the proper place??
I have a 580K. Mine started behaving that way, I eventually discovered #2 son needed it, didn't have the key. He hot wired it. When he put the wires back on the switch, he had one in the wrong terminal. The injector pump only got power in the run position, not in start. Moved the wire to the correct terminal, problem solved. did not have injectors done the pump came timed,so i believe i had the engine at tdc because the key way on the pump was lined up with the gear i did change filters there is a hot wire to the pump all the time
Does it have a heater in the manifold.?? On the filter assembly, is it the screw on type or the cartridge type, where the cartridge is sandwiched between the filter head and a base and a long screw is holding it together..?? Its possible to miss the key way and push the key out of the slot on the pump drive shaft.. just remove the nut & washer and look in the gear hole w/ a mirror to see if the key is still in the slot.. seen that happen more than once.. Actually had a customer DEMAND I come look at his equipment cuz I just did the pump and it wouldn't run.. After getting to the jobsite and talking the gun out of his hand. lol I found out, the pump wouldn't go back on "cuz of that stupid key" so he took it out.!!!! What an idiot.!! You didn't say you had 12v on the hot wire.. at ALL TIMES. WHY was the pump taken off in the first place.??
now it will start with either and run but it stills smokes white out of the exhaust. can it be 180 out
NO not 180* but maybe the gear dropped and your 1 tooth off.. I'm not 100% sure that's possible tho.. the gear may be trapped and not be able to drop.?? Why did the pump come off in the 1st place??
the pump was bad so i had it rebuilt, i think your right about being 1 tooth off. i will try that first. it was loose enough to drop.
It should be easy enough to figure out.. Find out how many degrees the engine should be at.. I think its TDC.. and then pull the side cover on the injection pump and line up the letter w/ the flat on the c-clip and lock the pump down.. I'll need the #'s off the pump to tell you which letter to line up tho.. It might have it on the valve cover or the data tag.. THEN the pump should just slide right in..
i pulled the gear off the front of the pump now i need to know how to tell when the engine is at tdc, then how do i put the pump in time with the engine?the gear is completely off the pump. please help i dont want to tear the front of the engine down again.
Under the injection pump is a plastic timing pin.. Push it in while rotating the engine BY HAND.. the pin will drop into a hole.. THATS TDC. Pull the pin back out.. or it will shear off the end when you go to start the engine.. Next, give me the #'s off the pump and I can tell you which letter to line up inside the pump.
Pump numbers Brand name Lucas,. Type 772,. Ser.05672dog,. Model 43042f840. The letters on the inside of the pump a b c d e f. What does the letter line up with on the inside?
Letter>> A at TDC
As you are looking in the side cover of the pump, where does the A line up?
Does the letter A on the gear on the front of the pump line up with the timing mark on the crank shaft gear
Post #9.. THE FLAT on the C clip.. I'm done.. good luck..
Thanks you've been more help than you know
